Penn & Teller Extend Historic Las Vegas Residency Through 2029

Penn & Teller have been performing in Las Vegas for more than 20 years, and they’re not ready to retire just yet. The duo signed a new three-year deal with Rio Hotel & Casino extending their residency through December 2029. The pair announced their decision during a taping of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, weaving the contract extension into their performance.

The Duo Has Created a Lasting Legacy

Penn & Teller began their residency at the Rio in 2001 after previous stints at Bally’s and the MGM Grand. The theater has since become synonymous with the duo’s sharp-edged, often self-aware, and rarely sentimental brand of magic. Over the years, the residency has become a landmark for Las Vegas. To date, the duo has performed over 12,000 shows, a notable achievement in live entertainment.

For over two decades, the legendary Penn & Teller have been bringing mind-bending magic and edgy comedy to our stage, and we can’t wait to keep the “wow” factor going.

Their longevity is less about nostalgia and more about reinvention. The material changes, the tone changes with the times, even if the basic structure of the show remains familiar. Penn & Teller’s willingness to reveal the mechanics behind certain illusions was once controversial in magic circles. However, this approach has become a defining feature of their performances rather than a liability.

Outside their shared act, both artists have kept busy. Jillette is about to start a UK tour with Piff the Magic Dragon, his first run of shows in a long time without his longtime partner. Teller, meanwhile, has turned his attention to a redevelopment project in downtown Las Vegas, backing a multi-space theater complex designed to support a range of productions, from intimate performances to larger-scale shows.

Residences Remain a Cornerstone of Vegas Entertainment

Even with the duo’s side projects, their Vegas residency remains central. It forms the cornerstone of their television work. “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” a staple of The CW, is set to resume taping later this year.  The show has made Penn & Teller household names even outside of Vegas, thanks to their ingenious magic tricks and their trademark skepticism.

The endurance of Penn & Teller’s popularity points to a trend in Las Vegas, where long-term residencies have become a staple of the entertainment industry. Headliners such as Bruno Mars have demonstrated how a consistent presence can drive tourism and shape a venue’s identity. Penn & Teller remain a unique part of the city’s cultural fabric.

Penn & Teller’s ongoing run is also defying industry expectations. In an environment often obsessed with chasing the next big trend, they have managed to carve out a career based on consistency and craft. While their tricks and references may shift to fit current trends, the foundation underpinning their performances has remained steady for nearly half a century.
