2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage

Canada and Qatar both ended their games with a tie, and they will now move to play against each other. This one is hard to square, but Canada has been naturally tipped to win. Still, a rather slow start against Bosnia and Herzegovina has put the team’s prowess in question for the ongoing tournament.

At the same time, Qatar has been able to draw against Switzerland, with a slow but contested 1-1 game. Qatar is a heavy underdog for the upcoming game, but perhaps they can turn the tide and secure a win even though the oddsmaker put them at very long (+1100). It could be one of the biggest upsets at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

What Shape Is Canada In This FIFA World Cup?

Canada is happy, as it now has a very good chance of progressing out of the Group Stage, and this will hinge on whether it can secure a win against Qatar in the very least, which will more or less tell the team’s story in the group as its last opponent will be Switzerland, which drew against Qatar already.

Off the bat, Canada is not in its sharpest form, although its players are focused and delivering when they need to. Yet, the Bosnia and Herzegovina game revealed a hesitant team that still has rough edges to polish off. Admitting a goal to the guests with Jovo Lukic scoring in 21’ created a real panic that Canada may lose its opening game.

It wasn’t until 78’ when Cyle Larin came through and delivered a goal in the opponents’ net to equalize the game score. Canada did have some advantages over their opponents, accounting for 60% of possessions and shooting 13 times in the enemy’s goalie, with 390 passes and 78% pass accuracy, all of which has helped.

However, Canada noticeably lacked to score more points by translating its control of the ball into crucial scoring. To overcome Qatar, the country would need to streamline its offensive, as the emirate was able to fend off against Switzerland which put in 27 shots, with 10 of those on target.

Larin may come through once again, but scoring against a team focused on defense would require that extra effort that makes great teams tick. Regardless, Canada is coming into the game against Qatar on a strong footing, even though the captain, Alphonso Davies, may continue to be recovering from a leg injury for another game.

Will Qatar Have a Fighting Chance Against Canada?

Now, Qatar will be on the backfoot here and there is no doubt about this. The team will probably not have the ability to muster a consistent offensive, and will be focused on defending its own goalie most of the time.

The upside here is that Qatar defense has been tested consistently by Switzerland which was given a (-370) chance to win against the emirate, and (+550) for a draw. Qatar was again pinned to (+1100) win, which is normal.

To be fair, Qatar was able to realize it only in 90+4’ with Miro Muheim bringing that coveted goal home. You might call it luck, but the fact remains that the team held its own and consistently repelled Switzerland’s offensive, even if the key goal came in the extra time at the very end of the game.

This said expecting Qatar to win over Canada would be a difficult one, but a draw (+495) while priced as a long shot by bookmakers may still be within the realm of doable for the emirate.

Pick: Pick Qatar to Draw (+495)
