17 Horses Killed in Devastating Fire at Saratoga Casino Racetrack

A devastating barn fire at Saratoga Casino Hotel’s harness racing facility in Saratoga Springs, New York, has claimed the lives of 17 horses. The horrible incident prompted an investigation as well as an outpouring of support from the racing community.

One Horse Survived

The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 am on June 16, 2026, in a barn located on the backstretch of the racetrack.

According to a joint statement issued by Saratoga Casino Hotel and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, 18 horses were housed inside the structure when the blaze began. Only one horse survived.

Initial reports indicated that seven horses had died, but officials later confirmed that the death toll rose significantly as crews continued their assessment after sunrise.

Firefighters responded quickly and worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings and stables. The affected barn was located on Nelson Avenue between the Saratoga Casino Hotel harness racing track and the historic Saratoga Race Course.

Unknown Cause

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities said an investigation is underway and that the appropriate agencies will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As a result of the tragedy, harness racing at Saratoga was canceled for the day.

“Our thoughts are with the horse owners, trainers, caretakers, and all those affected by this tragic loss. We are grateful for the swift actions of our security, nearby New York Racing Association personnel, and the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, whose efforts helped save numerous horses and ensured there were no injuries to people on site,” said John Matarazzo, director of racing operations at Saratoga Casino Hotel.

While the loss of animal life was significant, officials confirmed that no human injuries were reported.

The incident serves as a reminder of another major barn fire in New York racing history in 2024 at Tioga Downs Casino Resort when 30 horses perished

That blaze was later determined to be arson, and the individual responsible was convicted and sentenced to prison.

Saratoga Casino Hotel’s harness racing track has operated since 1941 and is a longstanding part of New York’s horse racing industry. The latest tragedy marks one of the deadliest barn fires to affect the state’s racing community in recent years.

Investigators are expected to release additional information once the cause of the fire has been determined.
