Mayweather Faces Charges in $200K Watch Buying Dispute

Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr is in hot water in Nevada after authorities accused the former champion of using a cheque without sufficient funds to buy a luxury watch.

Mayweather Potentially Faces Long Prison Sentence

Court filings say the 49-year-old former champion allegedly purchased a high-end timepiece from a Las Vegas resale boutique in late December 2024, making a payment of $200,000. Prosecutors say the bank later refused the check because it did not have enough money, leading to a criminal investigation that has resulted in two felony counts, as reported by Al Jazeera

The charges include a count of high value theft and a separate count of issuing a cheque with intent to deceive. Legal documents say officials believe the transaction was made despite the boxer knowing that the payment would not be honored when it was processed.

Mayweather was absent from a recent procedural hearing, represented instead by his lawyer. A court date for September has been set, with the case expected to progress later this year.

If convicted, the penalties could be stiff. Nevada law provides for lengthy prison terms for such crimes, and the theft charge alone can carry a sentence of up to 20 years. The charge related to fraud carries the potential for years in prison, financial penalties and restitution.

The dispute is said to stem from the purchase of an exclusive Swiss-made watch, a category known for its craftsmanship and premium pricing. The retailer reportedly waited months in hopes of resolving the issue privately before taking the matter to prosecutors.

The two sides’ lawyers see it very differently. The defense has said the disagreement should have been treated as a civil dispute, not a criminal case, and expressed confidence the matter will be resolved in court. In the meantime, the business involved said they have made repeated attempts to secure payment but to no avail and have no choice but to seek legal action.

The allegations come as Mayweather is already facing a host of financial and legal troubles. There are reports of ongoing disputes over unpaid obligations and lawsuits against former business partners and service providers. Although he made a fortune during his career and has been named one of the richest boxers ever, questions have been raised in recent years over Mayweather’s financial management.

Outside the courtroom, Mayweather has been busy with his professional life. Later this month he is due to box in an exhibition bout in Athens and has suggested more fights in the ring.
