Ilitch Family Expands Casino Ambitions with New Acquisitions

Detroit’s Ilitch family is taking a larger interest in the casino business, lining up new acquisitions in established gaming markets. The family’s holding company has created Ilitch Gaming, a platform to bring its casino, hospitality and entertainment assets under one umbrella. The move signals a shift from a largely local presence to a more expansive one, with deals already in motion in Mississippi and New Jersey.

The Two New Properties Offer Notable Advantages

Chris Ilitch, who has been running the larger business empire for 20 years, will chair the new entity. John Policicchio will oversee day-to-day strategy and deal-making, working to unite this collection of assets into a more cohesive operation. Such efforts likely aim to centralize control, streamline decision-making, and build a base for further expansion.

The formation of Ilitch Gaming marks a defining new chapter in the evolution of our gaming and hospitality business.

The family relies on a mix of market entry and consolidation. The plan in Atlantic City is to push for 100% ownership of Ocean Casino Resort. The Ilitch organization already owns a significant stake in the property, which has recently seen a steady turnaround with capital investment and operational tweaks aimed at improving its position in a competitive market.

Further south, the agreement to acquire Mississippi’s Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort opens the doors to a new market. The Gulf Coast has had a consistent track record in US gaming, with a mix of local and destination traffic. Scarlet Pearl is smaller than some of its neighbors, but has built a loyal following and a reputation for good, consistent service.

The Deals Must First Receive Regulatory Approval

For the Ilitch family, this planned expansion builds on its long-standing foothold in Detroit, with MotorCity Casino Hotel representing one of its key assets for nearly three decades. However, entering new jurisdictions brings its own challenges, from regulatory scrutiny to entrenched competition.

Despite the expected challenges, the new acquisitions could also lead to innovation. Scarlet Pearl was one of the first resorts to embrace on-site crypto payments, a move that drew attention at the time and created new opportunities for the property. It is unclear whether that approach will extend through Illitch Gaming’s broader portfolio, but it shows a willingness to look beyond traditional casino models.

We believe Ilitch Gaming shares our commitment to hospitality, service, and community, and we are confident Scarlet Pearl is positioned for continued success.

The family’s broader portfolio, spanning fast food, ports teams, real estate, and entertainment, can offer cross-promotion opportunities and shared infrastructure as the gaming arm grows. However, the acquisitions must first receive regulatory approvals before any changes can take effect. For the time being, Ocean and Scarlet Pearl will continue operating as they are.
