Former Star Entertainment executives fined over A$1.1m

In an unprecedented action taken by Australian regulators, a total of $1.1M in fines have been levied against five of the former senior executives at Star Entertainment. This includes both ex-CEO Matt Bekier and former chief legal officer Paula Martin.

By issuing penalties against individual executives, it demonstrates that regulators are now much more willing to hold senior management personally accountable for compliance failures. As a result, all senior executives in the industry will likely be under increased scrutiny for their decision-making processes and their oversight responsibilities, which could ultimately result in increased industry-wide accountability.

Thinking Out Loud…

This month shows how regulatory tightening is reshaping the future of iGaming.

Regulators are ramping up enforcement with greater fines and identifying both companies and individuals as infringing on the right of customers to play responsibly and safely. Regulators are making player protection a primary area of focus with failures associated with responsible gaming resulting in increased fines and legal liability. The industry is shifting to consolidation and specialization of operators, which incorporates finer points of their strategic business plans with more intense competition for market share.

For iGaming operators and providers, it is becoming impossible to ignore and therefore fulfilling the need for strong compliance and sound player protection frameworks along with clear strategic objectives are becoming mandatory to continue to operate in a heavily regulated and competitive marketplace.
