According to DICJ, Macau GGR dropped 12.1% to MOP$18.5 billion (US$2.29 billion) in June year-on-year.
GGR in Macau’s casinos was $2.29 billion in 2021, down 12.1% from a year ago. Disregarding the first few months of GGR from the 2020 pandemi,; the second several months were most affected by the fact that 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place this year, where all players are expected to go play and bet on football rather than visit Macau’s casinos to bet.
Despite the declining revenue in June total GGR at Macau’s casinos is $15.7 billion through the first 6 months. This is an increase of 6.8% on revenue from the first six months of 2021.
Analysts were projecting that TGR would significantly decline during the World Cup due to the expansion of the previous 40-team World Cup.
The new format of having 48 teams will result in 104 matches, which will have a larger impact on TGR at casinos in Macau over an extended period than did previous World Cups.
Looking further ahead, analysts expect that Macau’s gambling market will receive a boost following the World Cup, supported by a busy entertainment schedule that contains concerts by Babymonster, TWS, Enhypen, Taiwanese singer Zhao Chuan and the NBA China Games featuring the Houston Rockets against the Dallas Mavericks.
