2026 FIFA World Cup Round 16

Two historic teams face at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and not only are they two of the most intriguing squads to watch, they are also sworn rivals, with the neighboring country of Spain and Portugal caught in a perennial fight for the top soccer spot. Spain, though, has consistently proven to be the stronger team holding 17 historic wins against Portugal’s 6, with oddsmakers now favoring La Roja once again.

Can Portugal Secure Historic Win Against Spain?

The oddsmakers seem to favor Spain in the upcoming game between the teams, with only hours left before the first whistle. Spain is tipped as a strong favorite at (-215) whereas Portugal is taking its customary place as the underdog at (+185).

Spain has had a decent start of the World Cup and it has progressed comfortably through the Group Stage as well as the Round of 32, and will now have to secure another win in order to advance. The team did best against Saudi Arabia with a 4-0 game which saw Lamine Yamal, Hassan Altambakti and Mikel Oyarzabal score consistently.

The game against Austria in the Round of 32 also proved that Spain is here to stay and that it has every intention to continue, dismantling the European team with 3-0, with Oyarzabal shining during the game and clocking in two goals at the 36’ and 89’.

Pedro Porro also put his name as a World Cup goal scorer during the game, and helped advance the team to the Round of 16. Spain dominated Austria in every possible aspect, putting in 22 shots against the goalie, 10 on target, and realizing three of these.

The question is – can they maintain the same cadence and pressure on Portugal? Portugal has played a similarly strong game in the World Cup, although the team did falter against DR Congo and could not muster the final push necessary to win against the team, drawing instead

A Seleção played a convincing game against Uzbekistan, demonstrating their ability to perform effortlessly against an opponent they outclassed, and also an opportunity to practise their offensive in a real-world situation. The team has conceded more goals than Spain, but it has not lost any of its games, playing versus what are arguably better teams.

The question is can Portugal carry on to victory against Spain. The oddsmakers disagree, but we feel confident. Cristiano Rolando has been playing a much more confident role as a team’s captain, with his time at Saudi Arabia helping him shape his leadership skills.

Ronaldo scored twice in the game against Uzbekistan, but CR7 repeatedly assisted fellow players and played a more supportive role. It is this unique transformation during this FIFA World Cup that could see Portugal triumph over its perennial rivals.

Pick: Portugal to Win (+185)
