For close to 10 years, MGM National Harbor, Oxon Hill’s “premiere location for posh comfort, fine dining and thrilling shows”, has managed to set itself apart from competitive casinos in the area by offering free parking. All that is about to change within a week’s time.
Namely, starting July 13, 2026, visitors who are not part of the casino’s loyalty program will be charged $15 for self-parking in the resort’s garage. As expected, the decision has already bright in of heated talks and mixed reactions.
Discouraging Fake Gamblers or Adding New Burden on Real Ones?
The change, which will not affect members of the free-to-join MGM Rewards program who will keep enjoying complimentary parking for themselves and one guest, has caused a lot of commotion among regular visitors.
Some of them believe the new fee would discourage those who are not truly serious about visiting the casino from using the free parking spaces.
Others think that the new parking fee would further add another burdensome expense for visitors who are already spending money on gaming, dining, entertainment, or hotel stays.
A few voices also raised another interesting matter: will the new policy potentially make nearby competitors more attractive?
For example, Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, MGM National Harbor’s biggest rival, has not stopped offering free garage and surface parking, giving travelers a reason to reconsider which casino to visit.
The actual timing of the decision has also drawn attention, as MGM decided to impose the parking fee following two fatal shootings that unfolded inside the casino’s parking garage in the last two years, including a deadly road rage incident at the end of June.
Nonetheless, MGM has explained that the parking changes were planned well before the latest violence and, therefore, have nothing to do with security concerns.
The company says the new policy is meant to ensure parking remains available for casino and hotel guests as nearby development increases demand.
One of the biggest developments on the horizon is the planned Sphere National Harbor, a 6,000-seat immersive entertainment venue backed by Madison Square Garden Entertainment.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and is projected to attract millions of visitors each year.
While the new venue remains in the planning stages, officials believe it will significantly increase demand for parking around the resort.
