US podcast host and former ESPN host Katie Nolan recently discussed why she would not be adding gambling advertisements to her Casuals show. Despite the rapid growth of gambling influencers, she noted that her podcast was ill-suited for wagering content. According to Nolan, the commercialization of sports left little space for casual fans who wanted to enjoy their favorite sports without feeling pressured to wager.
The Casuals Podcast Caters to Everyday Fans
Nolan is now best known for her Casuals podcast that caters to a more everyday audience thanks to its light tone and rotating cast of bright personalities. She rose to fame during her time with ESPN, where she hosted the Sports? with Katie Nolan podcast and eventually got her own series, Always Late with Katie Nolan.
In a recent interview with Semafor, Nolan discussed why her Casuals podcast did not contain gambling ads, a sharp contrast to most other sports content. Notably, she was not morally opposed to gambling as a whole, noting that responsible sports betting was something people could often enjoy without any problems.
“I don’t want any gambling advertising on our sports podcast. I just feel like very quickly, as soon as it was legal, everything became gambling.”

However, Nolan felt that gambling content was now too integrated into mainstream sports and could detract from the simple enjoyment of the game. She noted that her podcast, as its name implied, primarily targeted casual fans and aimed to bring people into sports without additional pressure. According to Nolan, gambling ads could be dangerous for an unaware viewer.
Nolan’s stance significantly contrasts that of other sports content creators. Influencers have become an integral marketing tool thanks to their loyal fanbases and perception of trust. For many sports content creators, partnering with a gambling operator can be a no-brainer. The influencer gets a significant revenue stream and potentially exclusive content, while the sportsbook gains access to a new audience.
However, the continued integration of wagering content with mainstream sports has led to some issues. Recent betting scandals in the NBA and the MLB demonstrated how the allure of easy money can cause athletes to break the rules and jeopardize the integrity of the sport. The rising popularity of microbets is also problematic, as athletes are now routinely targeted by losing gamblers venting their frustrations.
While unorthodox, Nolan’s approach has some merit. She stressed that her Casuals podcast is a safe space for fans to learn about sports without feeling pressured to spend money and engage with what could potentially spiral into gambling harm. However, she is definitely an outlier. With companies like Kalshi and Polymarket now competing with traditional sportsbooks, it is almost impossible for fans to escape the aggressive marketing.
