The co-founder of FanDuel, Nigel Eccles, announced that BetHog, the crypto casino and sportsbook, will cease operations on July 31, 2026, shifting focus entirely to Sentient Studios. The decision reflects the growing commercial demand for AI-powered live dealer technology among operators.
Eccles explained that while BetHog performed in line with expectations, sustaining the platform for long-term profitability would require significantly more investment. “The main factor is really the success of Sentient Studios,” Eccles said. “We have significant pull from operators for our AI dealer products and we think it is a market we can really win.”
BetHog launched in November 2024 with a $6 million seed round, co-founded by Eccles and Rob Jones, also a FanDuel alum. In April 2026, the company completed a $10 million Series A round to spin out Sentient Studios, centered on Sunny, the AI blackjack dealer tested on BetHog since October. According to Eccles, AI dealers are consistently among the most popular games, “10 times more popular than its Live Dealer equivalent.”
AI Dealers Expected to Dominate Live Casino
Sentient Studios co-founder and CEO Nigel Eccles anticipates that AI dealers will comprise over 80% of the live dealer market within five years. He emphasized that operator demand has surpassed player enthusiasm, signaling strong growth potential for the B2B model.
Operators are particularly attracted to the flexibility AI dealers provide. Traditional live dealer setups require extensive staff, physical studios, and lengthy setup periods, especially for multi-language offerings or branded experiences. “We can give you five tables or 5,000 tables, instantly scale up and down,” Eccles explained, as reported by Forbes. “Language markets work the same way. You need to hire a hundred Norwegian speakers, you need to move into a studio maybe in Malta. We can do that instantly.”
This adaptability reduces costs and accelerates deployment. Operators can integrate local sponsorships or make operational changes in weeks, rather than months, offering a competitive advantage over conventional suppliers.
Technology and Market Impact
Sentient’s AI dealers stand out for situational awareness and dynamic interaction with players, a key differentiator from scripted alternatives. The technology supports multiple languages and is expected to expand from the current 15 to 74 languages within months. The platform has already received interest from operators across Europe, Latin America, Canada, and several Asian markets, though Eccles declined to name specific partners.
The rise of AI dealers reflects a broader trend toward virtual casino hosts, which can operate continuously and provide customizable digital experiences. Competitors, including Playgon Games, Digital Nation Entertainment, and Playtech, are also developing similar AI or hybrid live-dealer products. Regulatory approval, game certification, and player acceptance remain essential for broader adoption.
The closure of BetHog will impact only a limited number of employees, mainly in the marketing department. Customers have been notified to withdraw funds prior to the July 31 shutdown. Eccles reassured that the process should be smooth, with no expected issues for account holders.
By consolidating efforts under Sentient Studios, Eccles aims to capture the rapidly expanding AI dealer market, which he predicts will reshape live casino gaming globally. “It’s very hard for startups to be successful at one thing. It’s almost unheard of to be really good at two things,” he said, framing the decision as a strategic move to focus resources where the company can lead.
