A new proposal for a major sporting venue on the Las Vegas Strip has gained momentum, with two big names in the industry pushing ahead with early planning work. VICI Properties, a real estate investment trust, said it is working with Caesars Entertainment on a potential arena project that could help support a future NBA franchise in the city.
Undeveloped Las Vegas Strip Property Considered for Future NBA Arena Project
The aim is to buy a large tract of land behind the Paris, Horseshoe and Planet Hollywood resorts. The companies own a large tract of jointly owned land that could accommodate a major indoor arena, and executives said that makes it one of the more serious contenders among several sites being discussed for professional basketball’s possible arrival in Las Vegas, as reported by The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The development was announced during VICI’s most recent earnings call, where the company’s management said work is underway with Caesars’ regional operating team. No detailed designs or timelines are revealed, but the acknowledgement is a shift from speculation to active planning.
The site itself has long been noted for its size and strategic location near the center of the Las Vegas Strip. Some of the land is used for large-scale events, such as Formula One races, while other sections contain entertainment attractions. Its scale and proximity to major resorts make it one of the last places that can support a project of this size.
Potential NBA Team Could Accelerate Las Vegas Sports Growth
The NBA’s decision earlier this year to officially look into expansion opportunities has led to renewed interest in building a first-class arena in Las Vegas. League officials are looking to expand, with Las Vegas and Seattle considered the front-runners. A final decision is expected by the end of the year.
Industry observers say the battle to land a franchise is already fierce, with multiple ownership groups looking at bids and scouting out possible arena sites. Additionally, some of the proposals have included other components such as neighboring stadiums or multi-use projects to maximize the investment return.
VICI officials stressed that the arena concept is part of a broader strategy aimed at long-term growth and diversification. They noted the changing identity of Las Vegas, with new attractions and major sports teams expanding the city’s appeal beyond traditional gaming. Demand continued to be driven by existing assets such as Formula One events, major league franchises and large-scale entertainment venues, it said.
Another step in that transformation, if approved, is the potential addition of an NBA team. Adding more global sporting events to its portfolio could further cement Las Vegas’ position as a premier destination for tourism and major league competition.
