Major sporting events and digital payments: the challenge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

In this analysis, ProntoPaga examines how payment transaction volumes shifted during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the operational challenges created by major sporting events.

During a major sporting event, the challenge for the payments industry goes far beyond simply processing a higher volume of transactions. It also involves responding to sudden spikes in demand, maintaining operational continuity, and ensuring platforms continue to perform reliably as millions of users concentrate their activity within a limited timeframe.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup once again brought this challenge into focus. An analysis of transaction processing conducted by ProntoPaga throughout the tournament showed that the knockout stages generated the highest levels of transaction activity, highlighting how events of this scale require significantly greater operational capacity than a typical day.

The data revealed that the greatest pressure on payment platforms was concentrated around Argentina’s matches. Three of the five busiest deposit (Pay In) days of the tournament were associated with the Argentine national team. The final against Spain recorded the highest increase in deposit volume, reaching 52% above the daily average, while the quarterfinal against Switzerland generated the second-highest peak, with a 43% increase.

A similar pattern was observed for withdrawals (Pay Out). The semifinal against England recorded the highest withdrawal volume of the tournament, with transactions rising 55% above the daily average. Meanwhile, the Round of 16 match against Cape Verde generated the second-highest withdrawal peak, with a 45% increase.

Beyond the figures themselves, the analysis highlights that major sporting events have become a key variable that the payments industry must factor into its operational planning. The concentration of transaction activity within very specific time windows requires payment platforms to be prepared to respond efficiently to extraordinary surges in demand.

In this context, understanding these transaction patterns has become increasingly valuable for the fintech industry. Anticipating when and how transaction peaks are likely to occur enables companies to strengthen operational planning, optimize processing capacity, and improve their readiness for future international sporting events.
