ReferOn: “Competitive commission rates attract affiliates, but a seamless platform UX retains them”

Affiliate managers should focus on building relationships, identifying growth opportunities, and developing high-performing partnerships. Yet much of their working day is routinely consumed by navigating complicated systems, searching for information, handling repetitive tasks, and finding manual workarounds.

In this interview with Yogonet, Michael Saliba, Senior Sales Manager at ReferOn, explores how platform UX directly affects an affiliate team’s efficiency and ability to grow. Saliba discusses the operational warning signs that a platform is working against its users, what operators should expect from a genuinely user-focused system, and how better UX enables affiliate managers to spend less time managing processes and more time managing partnerships.

Affiliate managers are supposed to focus on relationships and growth, but how much of their time can realistically be lost to operational tasks such as navigating platforms, finding information, or dealing with manual processes?

To be frank, an affiliate manager shouldn’t be an overpaid data-entry clerk. When manual admin consumes 30% to 50% of their schedule, strategic growth and vision take a back seat.

This drain typically stems from three core pillars:

  1. Deal and asset management:  Hours are consumed by manually creating tracking links, setting up custom CPA/RevShare hybrids, uploading creatives, and verifying tags; A burden made far worse by complex setup requirements and confusing navigation.
  2. Data aggregation and reporting: Managers spend hours pulling, normalizing, and cross-referencing performance stats across disconnected affiliate software, partner platforms, and internal BI tools.
  3. Fragmented affiliate account management:  Handling networks or media groups while operating across multiple sub-accounts without master-level aggregation creates severe analytical silos.

Ultimately, these repetitive manual workflows leave little bandwidth for actual relationship-building, recruitment, and high-value strategic growth.

What are the clearest warning signs that an affiliate platform is creating more work for affiliate managers rather than helping them work more efficiently?

The clearest warning sign is an affiliate manager who dreads their morning routine, logging into the platform before their first cup of coffee and wondering what’s going to break that day.

Across the teams we consult with at ReferOn, four key operational red flags consistently stand out:

  • Reliance on External Spreadsheets: If managers constantly export CSVs to normalize, reconcile, or merge performance metrics in Excel before presenting reports, the platform’s native reporting and API integrations have failed.
  • Rigid Commission & Deal Setup: When creating custom deals or partner-specific bonuses requires manual intervention, database overrides, or support tickets instead of simple dashboard toggles. Routine onboarding becomes a bottleneck.
  • Absence of Master Account Aggregation: Managing media networks or large affiliates operating multiple sub-accounts without top-level rollup forces managers to log into separate accounts repeatedly to manually piece together multi-account data.
  • High Support Ticket Volume for Basic Assets: If affiliates constantly reach out to ask for custom tracking links, missing banners, or updated media kits, the partner-facing portal UX is non-intuitive and poorly organized.

How important is platform UX when it comes to the relationship between operators and their affiliate partners? Can a poor user experience ultimately affect the performance or retention of those partnerships?

Conversations I have had across all types of operator setups and feedback that shaped how ReferOn was built consistently reveal one common truth: you can have the best AI, reporting tools, or customer service, but platform UX is the single constant feedback point.

It directly impacts affiliate relationships, performance, and long-term retention:

  • Slower Campaign Execution: Clunky link generation and asset retrieval force affiliates to divert traffic faster to competitor platforms
  • Erosion of Trust: Complex dashboard navigation and convoluted deal setups make partners question tracking configuration and accuracy. Perceived obscurity drives publishers away.
  • Friction for Top Affiliates: High-volume publishers avoid programs lacking API access, sub-account management, or clear UI controls
  • Manager Burnout: Poor internal UX forces affiliate managers into manual tech support, pulling attention away from partner recruitment and growth.

Competitive commission rates attract affiliates, but a seamless platform UX retains them and turns operational efficiency into a lasting competitive advantage.

There is often a focus on acquiring more affiliates and negotiating better commercial terms, but how much growth can actually come from improving the tools and processes used to manage existing partnerships?

Focusing solely on recruitment and commercial terms can overlook the need for operational efficiency. Improving management tools and streamlining core workflows can unlock significant additional revenue lift from your current affiliate army.

In most mature programs, the majority of revenue comes from a select few top-tier partners, while the rest remains inactive due to UX and tracking friction.

Upgrading to intuitive, automated platforms like ReferOn eliminates bottlenecks across deal and asset setup, data reporting, and multi-account management. By replacing manual administrative grind with a seamless UX, managers can reclaim lost time and focus on active relationship-building and strategic optimization that drive true partner retention and incremental volume.

What should affiliate teams expect from a genuinely user-focused platform in terms of data access, reporting, communication and everyday workflow?

A genuinely user-focused affiliate platform should eliminate administrative friction by turning complex tasks into intuitive, easy, and self-service workflows.

For data access and reporting, teams should expect a central dashboard and fluid custom reporting that automatically normalizes stats, paired with master-level account aggregation to seamlessly manage multiple sub-accounts through dynamic grouping functions without manual CSV exports.

In terms of communication and everyday workflow, the platform must streamline deal and asset management through one-click custom link generators, instant CPA/RevShare hybrid setups, automated tracking tag verification, and a clear self-service partner portal.

Looking ahead, what do you think the next generation of affiliate platforms needs to do differently to give affiliate managers more time to focus on partnerships and less time on managing processes?

The next generation of affiliate platforms must evolve from simple tracking tools into smart, automated engines that handle operational chores in the background. From my perspective, future platforms need to focus on three key pillars to eliminate routine tasks and give managers their time back for true strategic growth:

  • Automated Deal & Asset Management: Software should eliminate routine maintenance through end-to-end task automation such as dynamically applying hybrid deal terms based on partner performance thresholds and using self-healing scripts to fix broken tags.
  • Unified Data & Conversational Reporting: Managers shouldn’t have to pull manual CSV exports or check separate tools; they should be able to ask simple questions in plain language and instantly get clear, aggregated stats.
  • Automated Partner Interactions: Smart, self-service portals should handle routine affiliate requests in the background by instantly delivering localized creative assets and triggering automated onboarding sequences.

By turning these repetitive maintenance tasks into background processes, platforms will finally give affiliate managers the bandwidth they need to focus on what actually drives growth: relationship-building, partner activation, and strategic negotiation.
