Las Vegas hotels posted their lowest room rates of 2026 in August, but the reduced prices did not fill the rooms, according to a tourism report released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
The destination recorded 3.03 million visitors during the month, a 4.3% decrease from August 2025. Visitation was also 136,700 below the July total. In a report issued Tuesday, Harry Reid International Airport said passenger counts declined 9% compared with August 2025.
The citywide average daily rate (ADR) for a hotel room dropped to $150.32 in August, which is about $7 below the July figure. Hotel occupancy, however, stood at 74.1%, down 3.4% from August 2025. Weekend occupancy reached 85.5%, whereas midweek occupancy fell to 69.4%.
Results differed by area. Properties on the Las Vegas Strip reported an ADR of $153.15 and occupancy of 77.0%. In Downtown Las Vegas, rooms averaged $85.68, and occupancy was just above half at 53.0%.
Revenue per available room (RevPAR) decreased 11.5% for the month to $111.39, or $10 less per room than in July. Total room nights occupied fell 3.7%, or 134,400 room nights, to 3,461,500.
The drop in tourism has not had a dramatic effect on casino revenue, since statewide gaming win in Nevada increased 3.1% in August. The lower visitor count, by contrast, has taken a toll on resorts that rely on filled hotel rooms.
Convention attendance increased 6.0% in August to 622,700. Events held during the month included Def Con 2026, Black Hat / WebTech USA Conference 2026, MAGIC Fall 2026, SuperZoo 2026 and CHAMPS Trade Show Summer 2026.
Domestic travelers were the most affected by the decline in air traffic, with a 10.2% drop. Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier in Las Vegas, carried 1,745,124 arriving and departing passengers in August, a 4.6% decrease from 1,828,498 a year earlier. Delta Air Lines recorded an 8.8% drop to 393,403 passengers from 431,151.
Frontier Airlines, which serves travelers who seek the lowest fares, is establishing itself as the second-largest carrier at Reid Airport. The airline is picking up business that previously went to Spirit Airlines, which went out of business in May. Frontier’s August passenger count rose 35.3% to 436,475 from 322,571.
Among the other top carriers, United Airlines carried 359,742 passengers, up 1.8% from 353,237, and American Airlines carried 345,363, down 1.6% from 350,950.
On a year-to-date basis, Southwest carried 14,359,804 passengers, down 0.4% from 14,418,452. Frontier’s total climbed 19% to 3,012,670 from 2,532,313, and Delta fell 3.6% to 3,405,729 from 3,531,109. United rose 5.5% to 3,031,558 from 2,872,745, while American rose 0.3% to 2,941,229 from 2,931,386.
Through the first eight months of 2026, passenger counts for both domestic and international flights are down about 7%.
