Hard Rock Bet is seeking to strengthen its position in the competitive U.S. sports betting market with its latest advertising campaign, “After Dark,” the third iteration of its Hard Rock Bet Party platform, featuring rapper Fat Joe alongside former NFL figures Jimmy Johnson and Michael Irvin.
In an exclusive interview with Yogonet, Lauren Varnas, Vice President of Brand Marketing at Hard Rock Digital, discussed how lessons from previous campaigns shaped “After Dark,” the company’s approach to celebrity-led advertising and responsible gaming, and the strategic importance of Florida, where Hard Rock Bet operates the state’s only legal sportsbook.
This is the third iteration of the Hard Rock Bet Party. What did you learn from the earlier campaigns that directly influenced the creative strategy for “After Dark”?
Each iteration has taught us what makes the Hard Rock Bet Party distinct, and a lot of that traces back to who Hard Rock has always been — a brand that’s stood for entertainment and pop culture, welcoming and celebrating talent and celebrities across every genre.
Consistency is an asset: the platform gets stronger when audiences recognize the world, its recurring personalities, and the invitation at the center of it – everybody is somebody, and everyone’s invited.
The strongest moments happen when talent genuinely belongs in that world, not just appears together in a commercial. “After Dark” builds on that chemistry while leaning further into entertainment, creating a setting where anything can happen and still feels unmistakably Hard Rock Bet.
Sports-betting advertising has become increasingly crowded with celebrity-led campaigns. What is Hard Rock Bet trying to do differently from its competitors?
The Hard Rock Bet Party gives us a platform where athletes, entertainers and everyday fans all belong. We build around talent’s authentic personalities rather than asking them to deliver a marketing message, and we bring that to life in person too, through experiences like our Party Bus tours, watch parties, and other live activations where fans can actually meet and interact with the campaign’s stars — it’s not just a commercial, it’s a connected experience.
We also benefit from the larger Hard Rock ecosystem, including Unity, physical destinations, and decades of credibility in gaming and entertainment.
Why was Fat Joe chosen to lead the campaign alongside sports legends Jimmy Johnson and Michael Irvin, and what does that mix of entertainment and sport bring to the brand?
Each of them brings something authentic. Fat Joe is the hype man, and it’s exactly what we lean into in “Hype Man,” where he’s hyping up fans and the bets they’re talking about while watching the game. Michael Irvin is the Playmaker wherever he goes, and Jimmy Johnson brings his own authority.
None of them had to play a role that wasn’t already true to who they are. That mix of sports and entertainment is true to Hard Rock, which has always lived at the intersection of culture, entertainment, and live experiences.
The campaign centres on the idea that “everybody is somebody” and everyone is invited. How are you translating that message into customer acquisition and engagement?
“Everybody is somebody” reflects the experience we want people to have with Hard Rock Bet, and it’s the same idea behind “Roll With Us” — we’re always inviting people in. Not everyone entering the category is an experienced bettor, and betting can feel intimidating, so we want the brand and product to feel welcoming, entertaining, and easy to engage with.
That means reaching people through more than traditional betting messages — talent, entertainment, promotions, and real-world experiences give different audiences relevant entry points, while an evolving product experience, personalized offers, rewards, and Unity integration give them reasons to stay engaged.
How are you measuring whether the campaign is changing consumer perceptions of Hard Rock Bet, rather than simply generating views and social-media engagement?
We want to remind people that Hard Rock is a brand they already trust, and why they choose to play with Hard Rock Bet. So we look at the campaign across the full customer journey — awareness, consideration, acquisition and continued engagement with the product — and at what people associate with Hard Rock Bet.
Are we entertaining, welcoming, differentiated, and connected to a larger ecosystem of gaming, hospitality, rewards and real-world experiences? The strongest signal of success is when the campaign reinforces that trust and contributes to measurable business outcomes.
How are you balancing the entertainment-led messaging of the campaign with the promotion of responsible gaming and safety features?
Responsibility is an essential part of the player experience, and it’s built into the campaign from the start—from meeting each market’s requirements and communicating offers clearly to reaching only age-appropriate audiences and making safer-play tools visible and easy to use.
This year, we’re reinforcing that commitment with two dedicated spots. One features Fat Joe, Michael Irvin, and Jimmy Johnson together, using the campaign’s familiar personalities and engaging tone to bring real in-app responsible-gaming tools to life in an accessible way. The other, “Protection,” features Jimmy Johnson focused specifically on the account security features built into the app.
Ultimately, the same player-first approach guides every aspect of the campaign: creating entertaining experiences while giving players the information and resources they need to stay informed and in control.
Florida features prominently in the campaign through the free-to-play Survivor contest. How strategically important is Florida to Hard Rock Bet, and what are you hoping to achieve there this football season?
Florida is a uniquely important market for Hard Rock Bet. As the state’s only legal sportsbook, we have both a significant opportunity and a responsibility to deliver a trusted, entertaining experience for players across the state.
This football season, our goal is to build awareness and consideration, welcome new customers to Hard Rock Bet, and give existing customers more reasons to engage throughout the football calendar. Our Florida-exclusive, free-to-play Survivor contest brings that strategy—and “Roll With Us”—to life by giving all football fans, including those who may not regularly bet on sports, a simple and accessible way to join the action all season long.
What specific results would make you consider “After Dark” a successful campaign by the end of the football season?
Success means “After Dark” deepens the differentiation we’ve been building around Hard Rock Bet – strong awareness and engagement that also drive consideration, acquisition, and continued product engagement.
Just as important, we want audiences to understand the world we’re creating: that everyone should feel invited when they roll with us, and not only through the marketing. We’re continuously evolving the product itself, adding new features throughout football season, so that invitation carries through into a personalized experience as much as a message.
If more consumers associate Hard Rock Bet with entertainment, personality, accessibility and the larger Hard Rock ecosystem, the campaign is doing its job. It should feel like the next chapter of the Hard Rock Bet Party, not just another football-season campaign.
