Advertisements for legalized online gambling operators may soon face unprecedented visibility as YouTube recently updated its marketing guidelines. The change significantly improves the reach of gambling ads by allowing them to use the platform’s Masthead system. Despite this measure, YouTube remains firmly against all forms of unlicensed gambling and will continue to isolate children from all forms of gambling content.
All New Ads Must Come from Reputable Companies
Google recently updated YouTube’s ad requirements, allowing gambling ads to use Masthead advertisements. These ads appear prominently on the YouTube homepage, making them especially attractive. Before this update, sports wagering ads were among the few gambling marketing materials that could use this feature. iGaming companies will now also be included.
This update becomes effective on October 21, giving gambling companies time to adjust their marketing policies. Companies wishing to advertise on YouTube must be certified under Google’s Gambling and Games Advertising Policy and hold a valid gambling license in their respective jurisdictions. However, Google has not clarified whether this new freedom applies to all jurisdictions.
All online gambling ads must fully comply with the broader Gambling and Games policy and adhere to all legal, jurisdictional, and age restrictions.
Google Gambling and Games policy update
The Masthead change notably excludes all unlicensed operators. This measure likely aims to ensure that only companies with strict customer protection safeguards can advertise their content on YouTube. Platforms wishing to join the program must meet strict disclosure requirements and ensure their content is only available in jurisdictions where they hold a valid license.
Industry Developments Necessitate Frequent Policy Updates
Google has recently rolled out several updates to its gambling ad policies to balance ad revenue and consumer protection. Accounts that want to advertise any form of wagering must demonstrate that they have sufficient player protections. Operators with too many gambling law violations may also be denied new online certificates, while the worst offenders could have their existing permissions revoked.
Products similar to gambling face the same scrutiny. Platforms like YouTube have specifically called out crypto, NFTs, and skins gambling as sectors that are also subject to restrictions and prohibitions. Sweepstakes are also age-restricted even if users don’t use real money to play. Overall, YouTube will continue to allow gambling content but will strictly limit it to adult users only.
Regular updates also help YouTube keep up with developments in the gambling sector. The platform has gradually become the go-to spot for slot streamers and gambling vloggers, with creators not only filming themselves gambling, but also sharing guides, explaining strategies, and examining various features. Many similar channels are increasingly popular, explaining why the platform prefers to regulate rather than ban gambling content.
