Finnish state-owned Veikkaus to lay off 200 workers, seeking “more efficient” operations

T

he Finnish state-owned company Veikkaus, which has a monopoly on the gambling business in the country, announced Wednesday the launch of next week of co-determination talks that will affect 830 employees.

According to an official press release, up to 200 employees will lose their jobs after negotiations with staff representatives which will begin Monday, August 16th.

Moreover, Veikkaus expressed that it intends to change the terms of employment contracts of other 330 current employees, in an “essential” manner.

As reported by Foreigner.fi, the company blames this situation on the operating environment of the Channels and Sales function that “has changed over the past years with its business volume dropping”.

This implies the “size adjustment” of their staff and “more efficient operations”, as reported by the company’s press release.

Casino Tampere will be opened in December.

On the other hand, Veikkaus is considering offering alternatives to dismissal to some of its employees.

Veikkaus Director of Channels and Sales, Jari Heino spoke about these decisions and said.

“We will plan the changes in a way that emphasizes our care for people in order that we can offer new jobs for as many Veikkaus employees as possible. One concrete example of this is Casino Tampere, to be opened in December, which has job openings for about 50 gaming industry professionals to work in a completely new type of a casino”.
