A woman in Las Vegas, who is also a city resident, was arrested by the police on Tuesday, June 9, after officers received a tip-off about animal cruelty.
The woman allegedly seized a duck from The Venetian outdoor fountains and injured the animal, prompting a swift response by the Las Vegas Metropolitan police Department (LVMPD).
A Woman Arrested While Holding the Distressed and Injured Baby Duck
The suspect is a 29-year-old identified as D. R., who acted on purpose. At around 1:29 pm, the LVMPD received a call that a woman had jumped into the Venetian fountain and seized a baby female duck – known as Daffy – with the perpetrator then proceeding to abuse and harm the animal in various ways.
D. R. was caught on camera committing several abusive acts, including smacking, throwing, and shaking the duck, before dropping it to the ground and then forcibly spreading its wings.
The surveillance footage revealed that D. R. was simply strolling with the animal and continuing to abuse it at various points.
Police officers were quick to find D. R. while she was still with the baby duck, and attempted to arrest her; she resisted, but was eventually booked into the Clark County Detention Center, cited for wilful maiming or torturing an animal.
Suspect Acted with No Reason At All
The animal was in visible distress, with the animal trembling and its right wing painful to the touch. The official police report said that D. R. showed no remorse for the injuries inflicted on Daffy and concluded that D. R.. had acted “without reason.”
D. R. will be appearing in court on Monday, June 15, and is held on $6,000 bail while her date in court arrives next week.
