New Jersey online gambling revenue hits record in May as casino win remains flat

New Jersey’s internet gambling sector continued its rapid growth in May, setting a new monthly revenue record while earnings from in-person gambling at Atlantic City’s casinos remained largely unchanged.

Internet gambling revenue rose nearly 12% year-over-year to $276.3 million in May, surpassing the previous monthly record of $273.2 million set in December, according to figures released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Revenue from in-person gambling at Atlantic City’s nine casinos increased just 0.1% from a year earlier, highlighting the growing importance of online wagering as a driver of industry growth.

When revenue from casinos, internet gambling and sports betting was combined, New Jersey’s gambling industry generated $627.1 million in May, up 2% from the same month last year.

The results come as regulators and industry participants monitor the potential impact of increased competition from neighboring New York. Analysts noted that the launch of live table games at Resorts World New York in Queens on April 28 may have contributed to weaker table game performance in Atlantic City.

“While internet gaming revenue continues to grow — achieving a new all-time single-month record — this month also set a new near-term record for May gross brick-and-mortar revenue,” Brian Tyrrell, incoming Faculty Director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism at Stockton University, said.

Slot machine revenue increased 1.8% in May, while table game revenue fell 6.1%.

It’s too soon to say for certain, but the decline in table games revenue may be an indication of competition from Resorts World New York, which launched table gaming operations on April 28,” Tyrrell said.

This situation merits further monitoring to determine how much of an impact there is and whether it will be lasting, or if it is a function of the novelty of the new offerings at Resorts World, or simply the natural variability of the industry,” he added.

Internet gambling revenue reached $1.3 billion during the first five months of 2026, the fastest pace on record for New Jersey’s online gaming industry.

Sports bettors wagered more than $912 million in May, while sportsbook operators retained $85.2 million in revenue after payouts and expenses, down nearly 17% from a year earlier.

Year-to-date revenue from all forms of gambling totaled $2.93 billion through May, up 7.2% from the same period last year. Gambling tax revenue reached $87.4 million in May and $419.5 million during the first five months of the year.

Among Atlantic City’s casinos, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa remained the market leader in in-person gambling revenue with nearly $73 million in May, although that was down 0.3% from a year earlier. Ocean Casino Resort posted one of the strongest gains, with revenue rising 10.7% to $46.7 million.

In online gambling, FanDuel, partnered with Golden Nugget Atlantic City, led the market with $64 million in revenue, up 17.6% year-over-year. DraftKings, affiliated with Resorts Casino Hotel, generated nearly $47 million, while BetMGM, partnered with Borgata, reported $34.5 million.

James Plousis, chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, said Atlantic City’s casino win exceeding $265 million in May for a second consecutive year could be “a springboard for a promising summer season.”
