Netherlands: Holland Casino breaks ground on Groningen casino

Holland Casino has started construction of its new Groningen casino at Businesspark Ter Borch, alongside the A7 motorway.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Holland Casino CEO Petra de Ruiter, Tynaarlo Mayor Marcel Thijsen, employees, and construction partners. De Ruiter and Thijsen performed the official groundbreaking alongside Richard van den Broek, a long-serving Holland Casino employee.

The development will permanently replace the operator’s previous property, which was destroyed by fire in 2017. The new property will focus on sustainability, accessibility and modern gaming facilities. It is also expected to strengthen Holland Casino’s presence in the northern Netherlands and support its regional operations.

De Ruiter said the groundbreaking marked a major step towards the future of Holland Casino Groningen.

“Here, we are not only building a new building, but also a place where guests feel welcome and where our employees can work with pride,” he stated. “After years of preparation, it is special to see that the plans are now actually becoming a reality.”

Thijsen highlighted the development’s contribution to Businesspark Ter Borch and the wider regional economy. The site’s position beside the A7 is expected to make it accessible to visitors from Groningen, Drenthe and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Van den Broek welcomed the start of construction after years of planning. “I am relieved that it is finally starting and can’t wait to walk in here,” he said at the event.

Holland Casino is the state-owned operator of the Netherlands’ regulated casino market. The company has operated without a permanent Groningen venue since the 2017 fire. It later selected Businesspark Ter Borch as its preferred relocation site in 2023.
