PGA Tour Champions player Matt Gogel has received a six-month suspension after the PGA Tour determined that he violated its Integrity Program by placing golf-related wagers.
The suspension applies to all PGA Tour-sanctioned competitions and took effect on August 23, the same day Gogel completed the Rogers Charity Classic tied for 30th. He will be eligible to return on February 22, 2027.
The PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel placed bets on PGA Tour competitions in 2024 and 2025. The organization stated that he did not wager on events where he was a participant.
“PGA Tour Champions member Matt Gogel has been suspended for violating the PGA Tour Integrity Program,” the Tour said, as reported by Golfweek. “Gogel placed bets on PGA Tour competition but did not bet on tournaments in which he was a participant.”
The Tour did not provide details about the specific competitions involved or the outcomes of the wagers.
Gogel Describes Bets as Recreational
Gogel addressed the suspension through a statement issued by the PGA Tour, saying he did not realize the wagers breached Tour rules.
“In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf. I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated,” Gogel said.
“I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions.”
The golfer also confirmed that he cooperated with the disciplinary process. The PGA Tour said the suspension followed its review under the Integrity Program, which prohibits players from betting on Tour-sanctioned golf events.
The rules extend beyond players themselves and cover individuals connected to competitors who receive tournament credentials, including family members, caddies, and agents. Violations can result in penalties ranging from education requirements and financial sanctions to suspensions or lifetime bans.
Veteran Player Suspended During Strong Season
Gogel, 55, has been a regular competitor on the PGA Tour Champions. In 2026, he participated in 18 events and earned more than $760,000 in prize money.
He currently sits 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings and recorded one of his strongest recent results with a second-place finish at the ISPS Handa Senior Open in July.
The golfer joined the PGA Tour Champions after turning 50 and has earned approximately $2.68 million on the senior circuit since 2021. He has yet to win a Champions Tour title.
Before moving to the senior tour, Gogel competed on the PGA Tour after earning his card in 1999. His only PGA Tour victory came at the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and he collected more than $4.5 million in career earnings on the main tour.
The PGA Tour’s decision comes after previous gambling-related disciplinary cases involving professional golfers. Since sports betting expanded across the United States following the 2018 Supreme Court decision, the organization has increased its focus on protecting competition integrity.
The Integrity Program was introduced to establish rules around betting activity connected to professional golf. The Tour has previously suspended players for wagering on golf competitions, including Korn Ferry Tour golfer Vince India in 2023 and Jake Staiano, who received a suspension for a similar violation.
Gogel’s case does not involve claims that he influenced tournament results. The PGA Tour confirmed that his wagers were placed on competitions where he was not playing.
The suspension will keep Gogel away from PGA Tour-sanctioned events until February 2027. Following the completion of the suspension period, he will be able to return to PGA Tour Champions competition.
