Patrick Dumont and his wife, Sivan Ochshorn, have become the controlling owners of the Dallas Mavericks after acquiring Miriam Adelson’s stake in the NBA franchise.
The transaction took place last month and raised the Dumont family’s ownership to 69%, according to the team. Ochshorn is Adelson’s daughter, while Dumont is her son-in-law.
Former majority owner Mark Cuban retains a 27% stake after selling control of the franchise to the Adelson and Dumont families in December 2023.
Dumont, who serves as chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands and represents the Mavericks on the NBA Board of Governors, described the investment as a long-term commitment to Dallas.
“It’s really about long-term investment in the city of Dallas. The Dumont family is really committed to building what we hope is the best arena in the NBA, a really significant investment in the city that will help create the new 40-year home for the Dallas Mavericks, a great experience for our fans and inspire our team to win championships. That’s really what we’re focused on. We had the opportunity, and we’re really excited about it.”
The family also said:
“We are deeply committed to building a championship team, supporting our fans, and growing the organization’s impact in the local community through our investments in the city of Dallas,” the Dumont family said in a statement.
“We are very happy with our family ownership and could not be more excited about the future of the Dallas Mavericks.”
Dumont May Add to His Stake
Dumont has indicated that the family could eventually increase its ownership further.
Under the original agreement, he has an option to buy another 20% from Cuban for US$3.5 billion.
“Our plan is to look at that and to do that over time.”
Adelson and Dumont first acquired their combined interest in the franchise in late 2023. Adelson sold around US$2 billion in Las Vegas Sands shares to help fund the deal.
She had limited direct involvement in the team, and the latest transfer places control more clearly with Dumont and Ochshorn.
The Mavericks are also pursuing plans for a new arena at the former Valley View Mall site in North Dallas, with a targeted opening in 2031.
Team Moves Forward After Major Roster Changes
The ownership shift comes after a turbulent period for the franchise.
Dumont faced criticism from fans following the February 2025 trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The fallout later included the dismissal of general manager Nico Harrison.
Dallas subsequently secured the No. 1 overall draft pick and selected Cooper Flagg, who has joined veteran Kyrie Irving as one of the team’s most prominent players.
Flagg and Irving also participated in the NBA China Games at The Venetian Macao in September.
Under team president Masai Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz, the Mavericks have started the season 4-3.
Dumont reflected on his experience as an NBA owner:
“The most important thing every day is just trying to work harder to get better,” said Dumont, as reported by Inside Asian Gaming. “It’s something that really applies in life, but it’s something that really applies too here. It’s been an experience as a new owner in the league. Dallas is a great sports city. I think we have the best fans in the NBA, very passionate, and it’s my job to make sure that we win and that we support our fans. I’m really focused on that. I’ve learned that there are a lot of things you can do – sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t – but you’ve got to keep pushing, got to keep going.”
Las Vegas Sands Connection Remains in Background
The ownership change also links the Mavericks more closely with a family associated with Las Vegas Sands.
The casino group owns Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and holds a 75.6% stake in Sands China, operator of The Venetian Macao, The Londoner Macao, The Parisian Macao, the Plaza Macao and Sands Macao.
The supplied material, however, presents the latest transaction primarily as an ownership restructuring within the family rather than a new corporate acquisition by Las Vegas Sands.
