Gaming in Spain webinar to examine legality of prediction betting under existing licenses

Gaming in Spain will host a webinar later this month examining whether prediction betting products can be legally offered under Spain’s existing online gambling licenses, as interest in prediction markets grows and regulators tighten oversight of the sector.

The webinar, titled “Licensed prediction betting in Spain?”, is scheduled for June 30 at 15:30 CET and will feature legal and industry experts discussing regulatory developments, market trends and the potential applicability of current licensing frameworks to prediction-based wagering products.

The event comes after Spain’s gambling regulator, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), blocked offshore prediction market operators Polymarket and Kalshi from operating in the country, highlighting increased scrutiny of the emerging sector.

Gaming in Spain founder Willem van Oort said prediction markets are gaining popularity both in Spain and internationally, prompting licensed operators to explore opportunities to offer similar products.

“Prediction markets are rapidly increasing in popularity, not just in Spain but in many other markets as well,” van Oort said. “It is therefore natural that operators who are active in licensed markets are looking at ways to offer such products to their customers.”

“We think that there might exist a viable legal approach to offering such products under existing licenses, and we hope to share this finding with a wider audience in our upcoming webinar,” he added.

The webinar will feature Xavi Munoz Bellvehí, Managing Partner at ECIJA Barcelona; Camille Gonzálvez, a TMT and iGaming lawyer at ECIJA; and Josh Hodgson, Chief Operating Officer of H2 Gambling Capital.

Topics will include recent regulatory developments, including the DGOJ’s mandatory problem gambling detection algorithm and cross-operator deposit limits, as well as market growth projections and the legal status of prediction betting under existing Spanish licenses.

Separately, Gaming in Spain released market analysis prepared by H2 Gambling Capital on the potential impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Spain’s regulated sports betting sector.

According to the analysis, Spanish licensed operators are expected to generate approximately €2 billion ($2.3 billion) in sports betting handle during the tournament, driven by increased activity from existing customers, reactivated dormant accounts and new player registrations.

The report estimates that the tournament could generate about €135 million in gross gaming revenue for Spain’s licensed operators.

Gaming in Spain also announced that its annual Gaming in Spain Conference will return to Madrid on Oct. 15, bringing together industry stakeholders and decision-makers to discuss developments in the Spanish online gambling market.
