New York’s eight online sportsbooks generated $214.4 million in gross gaming revenue during July, the New York Gaming Commission reported Friday.
Operators drew the total from a $1.88 billion handle, producing an 11.4% hold, more than double the rate recorded in June.
June’s handle reached $2.25 billion, a monthly record, but the hold fell to 5.19%, and operators generated only $116.8 million in revenue that month.
July reversed the pattern: handle dropped by roughly $376 million, or 16.7%, compared with June, yet revenue rose about 83.5% as sportsbooks retained a larger share of each dollar wagered.
Six of the state’s eight sportsbooks posted month-over-month revenue growth, and year-over-year revenue climbed 37.8%. The July hold also returned the market closer to the levels seen from January through May, when monthly holds stayed above 8% before June’s decline.
World Cup drives betting volume
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted in North America, pushed betting activity higher during a month that typically sees less action once the NFL, NBA and NHL seasons are off the calendar and Major League Baseball stands as the main draw.
New York’s July handle rose 34.3% year over year, following a 36.6% year-over-year increase in June; combined, the two World Cup months brought in $4.1 billion in wagers.
Favorable results on the three-way moneyline, including Spain’s win over Argentina in the final, contributed to the higher hold. Despite July’s handle falling below $2 billion for the first time in 11 months, the figure remained well above the $1.40 billion recorded in July 2025 and the $1.26 billion recorded in July 2024.
Tax collections climb
New York applies a 51% tax rate to mobile sports wagering revenue, with most proceeds directed to education and additional annual allocations supporting youth sports and problem gambling treatment and education. The state collected approximately $109.3 million in taxes from July’s results, up from $59.6 million in June, a gain of nearly $50 million that reversed most of June’s decline.
Year-to-date tax revenue has now surpassed $725 million, following the $1.32 billion New York collected in 2025.
Operator rankings
DraftKings led all online operators for a second consecutive July, taking in a $661.5 million handle. Its 11% hold produced $72.9 million in gross revenue, the second-highest total in the state. FanDuel posted the state’s highest gross revenue at $86.1 million, double its June figure, on a $651.2 million handle and a 13.2% hold.
Fanatics Sportsbook won $21.1 million in July, a 129% increase from June, on more than $221.6 million in wagers, just short of a double-digit hold. BetMGM recorded an 11.3% hold on a $138.3 million handle, generating $15.6 million in revenue.
Caesars reached a 9.3% hold on $122.6 million in wagers for $11.4 million in revenue. BetRivers accepted $40 million in bets with an 8.8% hold, while theScore Bet and Bally Bet each posted single-digit win rates and fell short of their June revenue totals.
