New Zealand advances 11 companies in online casino licensing process, others must exit by December

Eleven companies have advanced in New Zealand’s online casino licensing process ahead of the regulated market launch in 2027, while operators that failed to qualify must cease operations by December 1, 2026.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) announced on Tuesday that the auction attracted 32 bidders and concluded after 10 rounds, with successful applicants collectively bidding NZ$15 million ($8.4 million) for 15 available licensing rights.

Each license will cover one brand for three years, with a possible five-year renewal. Successful bidders must still complete the application and due diligence process, while the DIA has not disclosed its proposed brands or confirmed a launch date.

SkyCity secured two rights through separate subsidiaries, extending its land-based casino operations into the regulated online market. Malta-based SkillOnNet and LCKY, formerly Glitnor Group, received one right each, the latter through One Casino. Christchurch Online NZ, another Malta-registered company unrelated to Christchurch Casino, also qualified.

Rock Swift Group, previously licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, obtained two rights, while Rush Entertainment secured one. Super Group, the owner of Betway, received the maximum three rights through Baytree Interactive.

Entain secured two rights through Playvia Gaming (NZ), alongside another through TAB New Zealand, which it operates under a 25-year strategic sports betting partnership.

The Stella David-led group has identified cross-selling opportunities arising from its sports betting monopoly, positioning it as the only operator permitted to cross-sell casino products to sports betting customers. It has already launched Blackrush Casino and FoxySpins.

Cryptocurrency-focused casino operator Stake also qualified, following its expansion into Alberta, Argentina and Mexico this year and its acquisition of licenses in other regulated markets.
