Switzerland and Liechtenstein to share data on gambling suspensions

Industry

Switzerland and Liechtenstein have taken a step towards enhancing cooperation and player protection by approving an agreement to exchange data on gambling suspensions. The Federal Council confirmed this development following its meeting on October 25, 2023.

Until now, individuals who were banned from gambling in one of these two nations could still access casinos in the other country, creating a potential challenge in terms of cross-border gambling tourism and comprehensive player protection.

The newly sanctioned agreement paves the way for the mutual recognition of gambling suspensions between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. This measure is designed to mitigate the risk of individuals evading bans by crossing the border and engaging in gambling activities.

The fundamental principle of the agreement revolves around gaming operators in both countries exchanging essential data concerning banned individuals to effectively enforce suspensions. Furthermore, these operators will be obligated to acknowledge and respect each other’s gambling suspensions.

This collaborative effort aims to maintain the integrity of their respective gambling industries while ensuring that individuals who have been prohibited from gambling in one of these nations face consistent enforcement measures regardless of their location.

The decision to share data on gambling suspensions marks a milestone in the efforts of both Switzerland and Liechtenstein to reinforce their commitment to responsible gambling and the protection of players in an ever-evolving gaming landscape.
