2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage

Turkey had a tough opening game against Australia, with the team ceding two goals which was enough for the Soceroos to take home the game. Now, though, Turkey is starting from a position of strength, with the nation’s soccer team going up against Paraguay.

Paraguay was also famously defeated by the United States team with an explosive 4-1, and the hosts established their ambitions for the event – to go as far as they can, and possibly post a historic best. But now, the limelight shines on Turkey and Paraguay, with both teams having strong cards they can play.

Turkey Prepares for a Comeback Against Paraguay

Turkey had indeed struggled to find its best form in the game against Australia, but anyone who has been following the team is well aware that the country is capable of going the distance.

Despite conceding two points in the end, Turkey played a fairly strong game. The team possessed the ball for 63% of the time, and it launched 28 overall shots at Australia’s goalie, with 7 on target.

In other words, the nation has one weak spot and that is its defense. Turkey has a two-fold task before it – figure out a way to convert its strong ball possession into scoring, and also ensure that in the instances when your opponent has the initiative, the team can withstand an attack.

Australia shot 8 times, 4 on target, and 2 in the net, a good example of how you should be converting performance into results. Hopefully, the team has learned and is now coming more confident into its match with Paraguay.

The team has returned to the World Cup after a 24-year absence, with the team playing well in the qualifiers with 6 wins, one draw and one notorious loss 6-0 to Spain. Regardless, the country is sporting a lot of homegrown talent that has been further tried and tested at the best leagues, among whom are Hakan Calhanoğlu, Arda Guler, and Kenan Yildiz.

With a roster of stars able to threaten Paraguay, this means that we will see a lot of ball possession by Turkey, but the opponents will be on the lookout for a fortunate counter-offensive which has already cost Turkey dearly in their game against Australia.

Paraguay is definitely in a spot where it has suffered a handful of defeats – including to the United States and Morocco in a friendly game, with the team needing a morale boost – the game against Turkey could be it, providing that they do not allow themselves to be overwhelmed.

This being said, a draw is still a possible outcome here, and we believe that if Paraguay manages to work through its defense quirks, it could actually prove a pretty resilient nut to crack.

Pick: Draw (+239)
