Iran Is a Heavy Underdog, But Is This a Value Betting Opportunity?
Iran’s team has definitely not had it easy. Its home country is engaged in a freewheeling war against one of the hosts. The United States refused to host the team, at first, and it had to play against New Zealand in its opening game, a challenging opponent in its own right.
Yet, despite this string of calamities, Iran has come through, with the opening game against New Zealand among the most entertaining at the tournament. There are also hopes that Belgium is facing a bit of internal struggle, as Thomas Meunier and Timothy Castagne struggled to deliver for Belgium and may actually be replaced in the upcoming game.
This uncertainty can only work in Iran’s favor as Belgium is trying to figure out its pace and strategy, whereas Iran has already identified some of its issues, such as leaving gaps in its backline.
Another issue Belgium experienced was Leandro Trossard’s lethargic performance according to many. Despite his Premier League training, Trossard struggled to actually deliver and help Belgium break through Egypt’s surprisingly well-disciplined defense.
Belgium also struggled to take over Egypt in a meaningful way, with ball position split in the open, and Egypt even able to deliver more shots on target than the Europeans, with 4 against Belgium’s 3.
In contrast, Iran is a similarly capable team. Their opening game against New Zealand demonstrated a team that is fully capable of defending, even though there were holes in its backline that led to two goals.
Importantly, Iran was able to contest the ball possession achieving 47% and even more importantly, it delivered 17 shots, with 4 on target. Now, this ratio was much worse than New Zealand’s 13 to 8 shots vs shots on target, but it still demonstrated that Iran was able to fend off.
Belgium Remains a Favorite – But Iran Has a Hand to Play
But what of all of this? Belgium is posted as a rather heavy favorite at (-236), but what does this mean for the team’s prospects to win? Yes, the Europeans appear to be in a good position but internal strife continues.
Should Iran be able to block a few of the dangerous shots towards its goalie, it might be in a particularly good position to deliver a few of its rapid counter-attacks.
The game is likely to be a moderate-scoring affair, with between 3 and 4 goals netted by the game’s end. If you are really into a betting mood and think Iran can convert its experience so far into a win, you may want to benefit from the excellent odds being offered.
Pick: Iran to Win (+750)
