2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage

Portugal had a slow start against DR Congo in the Group Stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and now the team will be looking to secure an outright win against Uzbekistan and climb up the ladderboard.

Portugal is all but bound to exit the Group Stage, and with the bookmakers now giving the European squad (-475) this goal seems within reach.

Yet, the question remains – what is holding Martínez’s team back and if this is going to be another World Cup in which Cristiano Ronaldo shines on a personal level, but fails to bring his talent within the larger machinery of the Portuguese national team.

Portugal Needs to Secure a Win, as Uzbekistan Game Raises the Stakes

Portugal opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a shaky start, even though the team saw Joao Naves score in 6’ and immediately raise hopes that the squad may be to a strong start of the tournament.

Momentum slowed down, though, and DR Congo proved more than capable to hold up against the Europeans. In fact, the team rallied in the first half of extra time to see Yaonne Wissa score in 45+5’ stunning the Portuguese

Despite strong possession for Portugal, 75%, DR Congo and the team exchanged the same number of shots – 9 and 8, respectively with 3 and 2 shots on target, respectively.

But what held Portugal back in the opening game, may not do so in the game against Uzbekistan with the team now poised to rout Uzbekistan and the bookies giving it a comfortable lead

Uzbekistan just fails in certain areas such as defense. The team has been fairly well-oiled and it has achieved decent stats in the first game against Colombia, but lost it 3-1 anyway. Colombia scored 3 total goals, out of 6 shots on target, and out of 15 overall shots, possessing the ball for 67% of the time.

Uzbekistan had a fairly good passing accuracy at 80%, but relied heavily on counter-attacks, unable to keep the ball long enough in the opponent’s field.

For a moment, Uzbekistan’s Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored in the 60′, raising hopes that the game may go differently, but Colombia brought home two more points following that, one painfully in the 90+9’ extra time, which was rather unnecessary.

So, will Uzbekistan have a chance here? Hardly. A tie is a very tempting prospect at (+625) but it’s a highly unlikely outcome. So, what to expect here? The game will go over 2 goals, we believe, with the 1st Half Period O 1.5 a decent pick here at (+150).

Pick: 1st Half Period O 1.5
