2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage

The USMNT is having a historic moment with the United States’ men’s soccer team never having been in a better spot. The team is projected to possibly make the quarterfinals and the opening game against Paraguay last week has shown that the United States has upped its soccer game since the last edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Therefore, the group stages are an important litmus test for the team’s ability to go the distance in the event, and Australia will be another serious hurdle to test. This is our betting preview and what to expect at the upcoming game between USMNT and Australia

USMNT Has Never Been in a Better Spot – Oddsmakers See It

The oddsmakers are pretty certain that the USMNT has the upper hand, giving them a distinct advantage at (-176) over Australia, which is the underdog with (+460). Why is this newfound optimism?

The United States has never won a FIFA World Cup, and the outlook for the 2026 edition is not that they would, but the team is going to be giving opponents a good run for their money, potentially making it as far as the quarterfinals.

The opening game against Paraguay was quite something. While the United States was tipped as a heavy favorite and was going to win, the way of winning mattered. The USMNT managed to ride to victory with a 4-1 overall score, proving that it has what it takes to realize multiple goal situations.

It all started with Damian Bodabilla who scored in the 7’ and Folarin Balogun who clocked two goals in 31’ and 45+5’. Extra time was granted after the 90’ mark with Giovanni Reyana finally bringing a fourth goal in at 90+8’.

Paraguay did manage to pry away a single point at 73’, but ultimately, that was all the team secured. The upcoming bout with Australia, though will see the team vie against a competitor who also secured the maximum 3-point outcome from the Group Stage match.

Balogun has attested that this win was crucial for the USMNT to “get its nerves out,” and sort of set the rhythm the team is expected to maintain over the next games. Balogun has indeed delivered and met the hype with a strong performance of his own.

Christian Pulisic, however, was benched for the second half of the game, which has raised speculation as to his injury status. The USMNT is quite frankly in an incredible position and the next game against Australia will actually give a pretty good idea of whether the United States will also be able to push past Turkey in the game that follows after.

Australia the Underdog? What Does the Team’s Performance Suggest

Australia are indeed the underdogs, and there are no surprises there. The team has been adding a lot of new talent in a bid to strengthen its long-term prospects as a soccer competitor internationally.

Among the players to look forward to are Mo Toure, Nestory Irankuna, Alessandro Circati, Jordy Bos, and others. Under coach Tony Popovic, Socceroos have won 10 out of their 18 games, and this does say something about the team’s ability to perform internationally.

Australia’s game against Turkey was a more moderate affair than the USMNT’s explosive debut against Paraguay, but Turkey is again a soccer staple, and the international team is a force to be reckoned with.

Regardless, Australia has been able to see its players pry away a well-paced win, with a goal in 27’  by Urankuna and a follow-up score by Connor Metcalfe in 75’.

There are some chinks in Socceroos armor, of course. The team plays at a slower pace than the USMNT, and they are prone to the occasional defensive blunder, which costs a lot, especially with the new knockout round added to the FIFA World Cup

But honestly, for this one? We would give Australia the upper-hand despite USMNT’s strong performance in their recent game. If you care about backing a darkhorse, then Australia to win might be your pick here.

Pick: Australia to Win (+460)
