For a moment there, Argentina seemed lost. The Round of 16 game saw the Latin American nation on the backfoot, with Egypt’s Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko scoring 2 goals by the 67’ and the score remaining unchanged until the 79’.
Then, the impossible happened and Argentina will be playing in the quarterfinals. Switzerland, on the other hand, is a pleasant surprise to see this far along in the competition.
The European squad has progressed against mostly less experienced teams, but it defeated two dark horses of its own – Argentina and Colombia. All this makes for a spectacular game!

Argentina Comes Back from the Abyss, Can Anyone Stop Them?
Switzerland is going to have its most challenging game of the tournament so far, playing a seemingly untamable Argentina, which has come from what some Egyptian fans early judged to be a defeat.
For anyone watching the Argentina game through 79’ it really felt like Egypt was set to make history and eliminate the World Cup winners, but this dream came short, too, after Argentina took only 24-odd minutes to not only close the 2-0 goal difference, but also win 3-0.
It was absolutely staggering and analysts have pondered whether Egypt got cocky and gave up too early, confident that they will carry on to the end as winners.
Ultimately, the takeaway is not that Egypt made mistakes, but that Argentina was able to withstand the mental pressure of scoring three times after almost 80 minutes in the game with no success, and already losing by 2 points.
So, the issue for Switzerland here is obvious. How do you defeat what appears to be an increasingly unbeatable team? Evidently, Egypt came as close as any team before them, but lacked what it took to finish the job despite an elite crop of strikers.
Switzerland did defeat Colombia, however, a team that has allowed 2 goals against opponents in the World Cup, until the team lost to the Europeans in a 4-3 penalty exchange.
This begs the question how well Switzerland can do against Argentina. There are some good prospects in the team naturally. Johan Manzambi, Ruben Vargas, and Granit Xhaka and others have proven their worth and ability to repeatedly pressure and score against opponents.
But the underlying issue remains – this opponent has never truly been of Argentina’s caliber. A silver lining is that Argentina and Switzerland played against each other in 1996, when Argentina won (2-0) and most recently in 1994, when Argentina won again with 1-0.
While these may constitute defeats, the Swiss have a record for withstanding Argentina, but the team’s Messi generation are a threat that they have never faced in the past.
Pick: Argentina to Win (-295)
