2026 FIFA World Cup Round 32

Spain has had a shaky start of the FIFA World Cup, while Austria faced some pretty tough teams and held its own regardless. Although the Austrians lost to Algeria 2-0, they managed to demonstrate fantastic ball possession and overall – keep their head in the game. Lionel Messi proved too much, though, with the Argentinian strike scoring twice.

Down in the Odds, Austria Could Be the Latest FIFA World Cup Upset

This is the point where we will argue that Austria is a grossly underestimated team and while Spain definitely has strong credentials to base its claim to victory on, Austria is no pushover. The team has performed consistently throughout the event, able to defend and attack.

A loss to Argentina still saw the Austrians control the ball for nearly 50% of the time, but unable to organize as many attacks as Argentina. Argentina, too, struggled to barrage the Europeans goalie, but 3 shots on target were enough to convert into two goals for the reigning World Cup champions, with Messi sealing the second point at the 90+5’.

Right, but Austria is a formidable team with a lot of capability, and assuming that Spain will be able to rollover the team, when even Argentina ebbed and flowed against it is presumptuous, as is the estimated (-950) probability of the Southerners ending the team’s participation in the World Cup.

Austria’s main weakness right now lies in a slightly lethargic offensive, which proceeds slowly and deliberately, part of which is why the team is capable of holding the ball against world-class teams and champions. But will this be enough?

This is what the bookmakers are betting against when taking Austria’s prospects under consideration.

Top Teams Eliminated, Will Spain Be Next?

Both the Netherlands and Germany have been defeated in a spectacular fashion during penalties shootout, and Spain is not immune to this. While the Spaniards clearly have a slight upperhand they must make sure that they approach the game with thorough understanding of their opponents.

Spain had run into a few issues during the Group Stage of its own, barely defeating Uruguay and facing a new and resilient Cabo Verde which refused to yield. While Spain’s players cruised to victory against Saudi Arabia, Mikel Oyarzarbal, Lamine Yamal, and Hassan Altambakti will need to bring their A game in the upcoming game, and even then – they may struggle to realize enough opportunities.

Spain did convert nearly 50% of its 9 shots on target in goals against Saudi Arabia, but there will be fewer of these to go around against Austria. For our part? We believe that Austria is very underestimated here and will be betting on the underdog – maybe not too much.

Pick: Austria to Advance (+670)
