Norway Took It Easy Against France and It Showed
Aware that it will be moving into the Round of 32, Norway chose to strategically rest its A team in the Group Stage game against France, and it showed, with the team losing in a dynamic 4-1 game, which bolstered morale and was a matter-of-fact strategy for the Norwegians.
The question now is whether Norway’s A team will be returning and if so – will it be able to dispose of the threat of Ivory Coast. The simple answer is yes to both. Norway dismantled Iraq in a 4-1 game, Erling Haaland scoring twice in 29′ and 43′, backed by Leo Ostigard and Aymen Hussein who also placed the goal into the opponent’s net.
The team continued to perform well against Senegal, although the game proved a veritable to and fro with Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr scoring twice in 53′ and 90+3′ and bringing the team as close as he could with a 3-2 final score. Regardless, Norway played a dynamic game that allowed it to showcase its talents, as well as harden some of its less experienced players, which could prove an important asset down the road.
Moving into Round of 32, however, the team will heavily rely on its A listers as it wants to ensure an effortless victory and move into the next stage.
Can Ivory Coast Advance to the Next Stage of the World Cup?
Ivory Coast did play a great game against Germany and was able to not only turtle down but also attack and ensure that it retains the ball in its possession for 45% of the game.
This is the reason why observers are tentatively optimistic about Ivory Coast’s chances in progressing to the next stage, although against the full Norway lineup, the team may yet crumble. Germany managed to score only twice, against the team, though, but the issue is not with ball possession or holding against an onslaught of a high-scoring opponent.
It’s about finding the opportunities to actually score against the other team, and as the games against Ecuador and Curacao showed, Ivory Coast could be limited in the scope of its offensive. Their narrow 1-0 win over Ecuador only underlined that scoring goals, not creating chances, remains the bigger question.
Still, the fact that the team can organize its players well and secure enough ball possession, there is a chance that they may yet surprise Norway – but the final outcome may come down to one simple truth – do the Nordic squad make too many mistakes?
Pick: Norway to Advance(-181) and Over 2.5 (-122)
