CIRSA, a leading international gaming operator, has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Portugal-based casino operator Sociedade Figueira Praia. The acquisition comes shortly after the former company acquired a majority stake in a Paraguayan company.
CIRSA Expands in Portugal’s Gaming Market
In its announcement, CIRSA said that it has set out to acquire a majority stake in Sociedade Figueira Praia, which operates Casino Figueira. As its name suggests, Casino Figueira is located in Figueira da Foz and, as such, is a top spot for tourists seeking some entertainment. The casino has been offering licensed gaming since 1948 and has cemented itself as a beloved historic venue and a premier entertainment destination.
According to CIRSA, the acquisition is in line with its omnichannel strategy and pursuit of international expansion. Officials noted that the acquisition of Casino Figueira’s operator will complement the company’s purchase of CasinoPortugal.pt in December 2024. As a result of the two acquisitions, CIRSA now boasts a strong presence in both online and land-based casino gaming in Portugal.
CIRSA described Portugal as “one of Europe’s most promising regulated gaming markets,” which adds further value to the transaction.
CIRSA Executives Were Pleased with the Transaction
CIRSA representatives hailed the agreement. According to Joaquim Agut, the company’s executive chair, Casino Figueira will effectively become CIRSA’s first land-based casino in the country.
Together with the acquisition of CasinoPortugal.pt in 2024, this transaction enhances our ability to deliver a fully integrated gaming and entertainment offering across both online and retail channels.

Antonio Hostench, CIRSA’s chief executive officer, was similarly pleased with the deal, which will allow a landmark asset, such as Casino Figueira, to come under the CIRSA fold.
We are delighted to welcome the casino into the Group and to count on the continued support of its current shareholders during this new phase. This transaction reinforces our presence in Portugal and represents a decisive step forward in our omnichannel growth strategy in Europe.

The acquisition of a majority stake in Casino Figueira’s parent company comes shortly after CIRSA announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Slots Del Sol, a Paraguay-based operator.
