Crypto Giant Binance.US Seeks Event Contracts Expansion

Binance.US, the “licensed and regulated cryptocurrency exchange built for Americans”, is getting ready to jump on the bandwagon and join the fastest-growing segments of financial services in the United States: prediction markets.

They Could Seek Approval

According to reports, during the Rare Evo Blockchain AI Conference in Las Vegas, chief executive officer Stephen Gregory said that the company plans to seek regulatory approval to offer prediction market products in the country.

The filing for a Designated Contract Market license with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission could be submitted as early as August.

If given the green light, the license would allow Binance.US to legally offer event contracts, which are a form of derivatives that enable users to speculate on the outcomes of real-world events ranging from elections and economic indicators to sports and entertainment.

The potential expansion comes as prediction markets continue to gain momentum across the United States. Companies such as Robinhood and Coinbase have recently highlighted strong growth in the sector, with Robinhood describing event contracts as one of its fastest-growing businesses.

Coinbase also reported a significant increase in prediction market activity during the second quarter of the year.

Potential Turning Point

For Binance.US, entering the market could represent a major opportunity to regain ground after several challenging years. Before regulatory scrutiny intensified, Binance.US was one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the country.

However, its market share declined sharply following legal issues involving its global parent company.

In November 2023, Binance pleaded guilty to violating US anti-money laundering laws, agreeing to pay a $4.3 billion settlement

While Binance.US operates separately, the controversy, as expected, also affected the brand’s position in the American market and enabled competitors to boost their presence.

Despite the setbacks, Binance still remains one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency companies, with its broader ecosystem reportedly serving over 300 million users worldwide and controlling a substantial share of global crypto trading volume.

A move into prediction markets could therefore turn Binance.US into an immediate competitor in an increasingly crowded industry. The company could also use its experience in the space through Binance’s partnership with Predict.fun, which offers event contracts on the BNB Smart Chain outside the US.

Regulatory hurdles, however, will not vanish, as Binance.US is still unavailable in several states, including New York and Texas, while customers in others face restrictions on dollar transactions.

Still, if regulators approve its application, Binance.US could soon become one of the biggest names in America’s rapidly expanding prediction market industry.
