One of Las Vegas’ best chances of hosting an NBA franchise centers on the planned Diamond Arena, to be located on the southern part of the Strip. The group behind the project recently announced that it now possesses all 11 acres needed for the project after acquiring the final 3-acre parcel. It remains unclear when construction will start, as such developments usually require extensive permits from local authorities.
Diamond Arena Boasts an Ambitious Vision
According to the developers, the chosen location is perfect for a high-profile arena because of its proximity to several high-profile casino resorts. In addition to the arena, the project will feature a sizeable ground-level plaza and a full suite of team and broadcast facilities. However, the most exciting feature is undoubtedly the private jet terminal, which will service NBA teams, star entertainers and VIP visitors.
This terminal ties to the project’s robust transportation infrastructure. Diamond Arena’s proximity to Harry Reid International Airport and several major road arteries will ensure that visitors to the 21,212-seat arena can arrive and depart without fearing traffic congestion. If realized, Diamond Arena could become one of the USA’s leading NBA hubs.
Some of the notable land owners behind the project, such as Chetak Development, were confident that Diamond Arena represented Las Vegas’ best chance of capitalizing on its long-awaited NBA franchise. However, project spokesperson Tom Letizia previously admitted that there is no definitive completion timeline for the new arena due to the reliance on certain regulatory approvals.
Other Projects Could Offer Stiff Competition
An NBA franchise could be transformative for Las Vegas, helping the city diversify its image and attract fresh audiences. In March, NBA officials confirmed that Vegas and Seattle were the most likely candidates for franchise expansion. Vegas in particular is emerging as a major sports hub, already hosting big teams like the Raiders and the Golden Knights.
However, Diamond Arena is not the only Vegas project aiming to host an NBA franchise. Billionaire Bill Foley, majority owner of the Vegas Golden Knights, recently announced his own plans to host a team at T-Mobile Arena. Meanwhile, Mayor Shelley Berkley pitched yet another alternative proposal focused on a 20-acre site near City Hall and the World Market Center.
No matter which project prevails, it is clear that Las Vegas’s reputation as a leading sports destination will only grow. If the NBA proceeds with its expansion plans, the new teams could begin play in the 2028-29 season at the earliest. This strict timeline means that developments with a tighter schedule could have an advantage in securing the lucrative franchise.
