Mark Cuban Wants Court to See Details of Mavericks Arena Deal

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, is taking his battle with the team’s current management to court to obtain internal documents concerning a proposed arena project in North Dallas

Cuban Pushes for Transparency in Mavericks’ Future Arena Project

The billionaire entrepreneur sold a controlling stake in the franchise in 2023 but held onto a large minority stake. He brought a legal action in Dallas County seeking to unearth documents related to the proposed development at the site of the former Valley View mall, as reported by The Dallas Morning News. The filing points to the team’s majority ownership group led by Patrick Dumont and backed by the Adelson family.

At the center of the dispute is Cuban’s assertion that he has been locked out of important business decisions, although he claims there were agreements previously made that involved him in basketball operations and some commercial opportunities. He is seeking information about how the arena project is being financed, who owns it, and how the development entity managing the project functions, court documents show.

The arena is part of a larger plan that would move the Mavericks from their current downtown home to a 104-acre site in North Dallas. The franchise’s current lease expires in 2031, and the new venue is expected to open in that time frame as part of a larger mixed-use development.

Cuban says the new owners have intentionally been keeping him in the dark on the deal, including the formation of a corporate entity to purchase land and oversee development. He says the lack of transparency may be in conflict with his contractual rights and could limit his ability to take part in what he sees as a major investment opportunity.

The dispute also revives earlier tensions between Cuban and Dumont over control of the team’s sporting decisions. Cuban has said there was an informal understanding when the sale was completed that he would continue to oversee basketball, while Dumont would handle the business side. However, that setup appears to have broken down, particularly following a controversial roster move involving star player Luka Dončić, which Cuban reportedly only learned about in the final stages.

The current filing does not yet seek financial damages, but it could open the door to a broader legal battle depending on what information is uncovered. Cuban has suggested that it would be very difficult to undo the arena deal once it is done, so his request has a sense of urgency.

Mavericks ownership representatives have not commented publicly on the allegations. Meanwhile, some former team executives have questioned Cuban’s stance, pointing out that he willingly gave up control when he sold his majority stake.
