American professional poker player Jared Griener has reportedly been robbed shortly after the recent World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in Las Vegas. According to the player himself, the robbers were waiting for him at his Airbnb location.
The Player Was Attacked as He Returned to His Rental Apartment
Griener revealed details about the robbery via a post on X. The player, who had finished 218th at the WSOP Main Event, won $57,500. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to celebrate.
Griener was returning to his Airbnb Sunday evening where, to his unfortunate surprise, he found that two people were already waiting for him at his rental apartment. Described as “two black guys” who had apparently been “waiting for him,” the two intruders proceeded to assault and pin Griener.
“They tackled me and pinned me down and told me they would kill me if I moved,” Griener said. The robbers then threatened to kill him if he didn’t tell them when his backpack was. After he told them it was in his car, he was duct-taped and had kitchen plates placed on his back so that the robbers could hear him if he moved or tried to escape.
The robbers then proceeded to search the apartment. They eventually took the cash and left.
The Robbers Took the Poker Pro’s Money and Left
Once Griener was sure that the robbers had left, he managed to get out of his constraints and ran to a neighbor to call. The police arrived and launched a crime scene investigation. As it turned out, a neighbor’s surveillance camera showed the two robbers arrive shortly before Griener.
Griener believes that the two men were well aware of who he was and had been watching him during the WSOP event. The likely hurried to his Airbnb with the intention of intercepting him and taking his cash.
As it turned out, the two robbers did not break in, but actually knew the Airbnb’s door code, suggesting that the robbers might have some familiarity with the Airbnb location in question.
In any case, Griener appeared unharmed, if a bit shocked by what had unfolded. In the meantime, the police initiated a helicopter search for the criminals, but, as of the time of this writing, the robbers are still at large.
