A postal worker in Australia has been sentenced for the theft of bank cards, which were then used to fund the woman’s online gambling habit, as well as luxury purchases.
Postal Worker Fuels Gambling, Expensive Purchases with Stolen Bank Cards
Identified as M. P. C., the man will now serve a sentence through December 2027, having been found guilty of stealing dozens of bank cards from secure mail and abusing his work responsibilities.
C. is not the only person involved in the scheme; however, two co-conspirators were also identified by authorities, leading to the theft of more than $100,000.
C. specifically benefited from $30,000 in cash and various goods, which included two 24-carat gold bracelets bought just 12 hours before the man’s arrest. During his sentencing, C. was accused of a significant breach of trust in safely delivering items to customers.
The sentence has shocked his colleagues and family, as C. has been a model employee since he became a postal worker in 2007. However, his gambling addiction took hold of him in 2024.
Jail Sentence Unavoidable Given Seriousness of Offense
Evidence provided to the court against C., though, was not all that flattering, with the man describing his situation as “fucked” and adding that he “needed money.” Australia Post has also acted decisively upon discovering the scheme:
“We worked very closely with NSW Police throughout their investigation and continually review systems and processes to strengthen the security of our operations.”
The scheme spanned 15 months and involved the employee as well as two other accomplices. While C. tried to have his sentence reduced to a community sentence, Judge Jillian Kiely disagreed, arguing that the offense was too serious to not include a jail term.
