Puig Seeks Bankruptcy Protection before Federal Sentencing

Former Major League Baseball outfielder Yasiel Puig is in increasing legal and financial distress after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early July just weeks before he is set to be sentenced in a federal case for illegal sports betting

Former MLB Star Yasiel Puig Files Bankruptcy Amid Court Battle

Court documents indicate the filing was made July 2 in a Florida bankruptcy court. The move allows Puig to restructure his finances while still addressing outstanding obligations to creditors. The paperwork estimates put his total assets at somewhere between $10 million and $50 million, and his liabilities are estimated to be between $1 million and $10 million. However, the court soon flagged the filing as incomplete, saying key financial information, including lists of creditors and summaries of assets, were not included.

The financial pressure comes as Puig faces a July 28 court date that could have a major impact on his future. Earlier this year, he was convicted by a federal jury of lying to investigators and obstructing justice in an investigation of an illegal gambling operation. Prosecutors are pushing for a prison term of about 18 months along with other penalties, and his legal team is seeking a more lenient sentence that includes supervised release.

The case centers on Puig’s alleged connections to a betting ring operated by former minor league pitcher Wayne Nix. Evidence presented at trial showed Puig placed a number of bets through intermediaries in 2019 and lost a significant amount of money betting in a short period of time. They also said he lied about his role when interviewed by federal agents.

Puig’s Post-MLB Career Overshadowed by Debt and Legal Challenges

Puig made tens of millions of dollars in his professional career, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but his financial situation does not appear to have improved in the past few years. Reports say he ran up large gambling debts, which might help explain his current woes. Several properties he owns are also reportedly at risk of foreclosure.

Puig continued to play internationally after his MLB career was over, with stints in Mexico, South Korea, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. He was on a championship team in the Caribbean Series in 2024. More recently, he signed on with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Canadian Baseball League where he has put up some impressive individual numbers, even as the team has struggled in the standings.

The latest twist adds another chapter to a legal saga that has been unfolding for years. Earlier coverage of the case alluded to his early legal problems and potential financial consequences.

With his legal fate and financial future hanging in the balance, Puig now enters a defining period that could decide the next chapter of his life, on and off the field.
