Sweden has introduced a new 10-day self-exclusion option through Spelpaus. It will give players a shorter break from gambling across all licensed operators.
Spelpaus is the national register of Sweden. Spelpaus was launched in 2019 and after that the platform attracted over 134 thousands of registrations.
Before that gamblers an players could choose longer exclusion periods than 10 days. This new option applies to both online and land-based gambling services covered by the national system.
This type of self-exclusion update comes ahead of a major technical upgrade. The new update will start working on 1 August. On that date all licensed operators must connect to a redesigned Spelpaus system using a new API.
The changes will require operators to check customers’ self-exclusion status in real time before allowing them to gamble.
Sweden has also recently tightened its responsible gambling rules, banning licensed operators from accepting deposits funded through credit cards, personal loans, overdrafts, and “buy now, pay later” service
The introduction of the improved system coincides with a change in leadership at Spelinspektionen, as Peter Knutsson replaces Camilla Rosenberg as director general, continuing the regulator’s focus on stronger consumer protection and compliance.
