WorldGaming has prohibited the use of Meta Glasses and other similar gadgets at its events, after hearing from exhibitors expressing concern about their privacy and the protection of intellectual property.
WorldGaming is the company that puts together the ICE exhibition and the iGB Affiliate Barcelona event. The leaders of the company have amended their ‘Good Neighbour’ policy to stop the use of Meta Glasses and any other devices with the ability to record videos, sounds, and images discreetly.
James Williams, who created the policy, stated that the devices in question cannot be worn by the attendees during the events as the attendees could be recorded without their permission and without even them noticing it.
Photographs and recording can only be done openly and in accordance with the organizer’s Code of Conduct and with the consent of participants in the process of recording.
Margaret Dunn, Portfolio Director responsible for ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona said:
We were contacted by exhibitors concerned that their IP was in danger of being compromised by the use of smart glasses. Copyright infringements undermine responsible progressive businesses and devalue their investment in R&D – which is the lifeblood of every creative and dynamic industry such as ours. ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona are at the intersection of where gaming meets technology and we need to protect and support the industry innovators in every way possible: hence the decision to amend our Good Neighbour policy to ban the use of devices which can enable covert recording.
The amendment was made following the requests made by the exhibitors, who expressed concerns about the possibility of copying their designs and other distinctive features.
WorldGaming joins a growing number of venues and organisations introducing restrictions on smart glasses and other wearable recording technology.
