YouTube Slot Vlogs Are Transforming Gambling Content, Study Says

Long gone are the days when gambling was confined to casino floors, sportsbook advertisements or traditional industry marketing.

YouTube has gradually become the go-to spot for slot streamers and gambling vloggers who have built large audiences around their IRL (in real life) visits to casinos or online gameplay, jackpots, and betting strategies in general.

Betting Strategy on Top

New research from Tiange (Patrick) Xu, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) International Gaming Institute, examined how this fast-growing form of gambling content is presented and how viewers respond to it.

Xu presented his study, titled “An In-Depth Analysis of Slot Machine Vlogs on YouTube,” during the 19th International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking.

The research examined 170 English-language slot vlogs from 17 YouTube channels and analyzed 43,837 viewer comments.

The study identified four major themes in the videos: betting strategies, slot game features and mechanics, real-time gambling reactions, and viewer interaction.

Betting strategy was the most common topic, appearing in 41% of the videos, while game features and mechanics accounted for 39%.

Another finding of the research suggests that creators do not only film themselves while gambling, but they become guides for their viewers, explaining the games in real time, discussing the sizes of the bets, and emphasizing features while building strong communities.

Responsible Gambling: a Matter of Concern

One of the most noteworthy findings of the research, however, is related to responsible gambling messaging, or, better yet, the lack thereof.

Xu discovered that only 9.41% of the videos analyzed contained responsible gambling terminology, while, even more disturbing, explicit reminders to gamble responsibly only showed up in less than 2% of the videos.

The silver lining, however, is that those videos that did contain responsible gambling messaging were tied to higher engagement, including stronger like-to-view and comment-to-view ratios.

The researcher, however, cautioned that the finding is correlational and does not prove that responsible gambling messages caused the additional engagement.

Authenticity, a Key Factor

Speaking to Covers about the reasons behind the increasing popularity of gambling vlogs, Xu referred to the accessibility of YouTube and the fact that casinos are more and more open to allowing patrons to film their experiences.

Plus, the researcher mentioned that audiences love to watch gambling in authentic environments, and see content creators make wagers they might not be personally willing or able to make.

Another essential conclusion of the research says that audiences are not simply watching jackpot reactions, as viewers engage in discussing specific games, bonus features, and betting strategies, while praising creators, suggesting future content, and identifying themselves as regular followers.

Overall, around 60% of comments were neutral and 36% positive, while only about 4% were negative.
