Josh “JT” Turner, a poker pro from St. Louis who won seven WSOP Circuit rings, passed away four weeks ago following a year-long battle with cancer.
Daniel Lowery, who recently won his 21st Circuit ring, shared the tragic news of his friend on Facebook. He explained that Turner’s mother decided to wait a while to share the news publicly, which she did on X.
Turner’s mom, under his X account, informed his followers that the beloved poker pro passed away on Sept. 2 after battling cancer the past two years. She wrote that he “fought like a warrior,” much like the “way he played poker.”
Looking Back on Josh Turner’s Great Poker Career
Turner, 46, who often played at The Lodge Card Club in the Austin, Texas area, was memorialized on Sept. 8 at the Kutis Affton Chapel in in St. Louis, Missouri. Many friends within the poker community, including Lowery, have shared memories of Turner and sent condolences to his family on social media.
“One of the truest, stand up guys on the scene,” Lowery wrote of his late friend.
Lowery said he’d known Turner was ill, “but didn’t know it was terminal.” The news came as a shock to many of the people he impacted within the poker community.
Turner was known as a good friend to many and his poker results speak for itself. The Missouri native who was born Dec. 20, 1979 had over $2.4 million in live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob.
He won seven WSOP Circuit rings, his most recent one in 2018. He also had RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) titles, not to mention numerous cashes at The Lodge in Texas and plenty of scores in Las Vegas and elsewhere.
Turner’s largest cash — $294,760 — came in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Double Stack event at the 2018 World Series of Poker, a third-place finish. He reached three final tables in bracelet events that summer.
The St. Louis poker pro’s last cash came at his favorite card room, The Lodge Card Club, last month. PokerNews would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family of Josh Turner.
