South Korea Come in as the Underdog – Or Are They?
Right from the start, South Korea is posted as the slight underdogs in the upcoming game with (+323) whereas Mexico are set at (+100). South Korea may be an underdog, but the team has demonstrated excellent qualities in the game against the Czech Republic.
While conceding a goal in the 59’ of the game, the team then rebounded in 67‘ when Hwang In-beom equalized the score, and Oh Hyoen-gyu turned the tide in 80’ when a second goal was scored for the South Korean team.
The timing matters, as it demonstrated South Korea’s ability to hold its own in a crunch and appear resilient to the mental challenge of playing from a disadvantage position, and still manage to turn the tide in a crunch. But South Korea did show some weaknesses in its defense, which could produce different results against trickier squads later in the tournament.
Kim Seung-guy, the goalie, conceded two goals, one of which was disallowed. He notably shone when he saved a crucial attempt at point blank range that would have otherwise foiled South Korea’s plans to leave the game versus the Czech Republic with all 3 points.
Why Are Mexico Tipped to Win the Upcoming Bout?
Right, back to Mexico – the team has been having a fantastic time at World Cup events, and while it has not won a World Cup it has consistently been able to advance.
The game against South Korea has revealed several strengths and accompanying weaknesses. For one, Mexican players can tend to player a little rougher when prodded, which came at a cost – Cesar Montes was thrown out with a red card in the 90+2’ extra time, while South Africa lost two players to discipline – Yaya Sithole in 50’ and Themba Zwane in 84’.
Regardless, Mexico put in an explosive game in the early minutes and immediately had South Africa on the backfoot. Julian Quinones scored for the home team in 9’ setting the pace of the game from that point on.
The dynamic carried well over to the 67’ when Raul Jimenez put in the second goal and finalized the game score. Most of the oddsmakers though are drawing on historic clashes between the two teams, with Mexico winning 2 in a World Cup event against South Korea in 1998 and 2018.
South Korea also ranks 10 spots behind Mexico in FIFA’s official rankings, but providing the team can pick up its defense, Mexico can easily find itself in a hard spot. Ultimately? A draw may be the most likely event here.
Pick: Draw (+235)
