DAZN Bet launched in Alberta in July after entering the Canadian market through Ontario, marking the sportsbook’s first expansion into North America. As competition intensifies across Canada’s regulated provinces, the operator is betting on brand recognition, localized products and a measured approach to integrating sports media and wagering.
In this exclusive interview with Yogonet, Richard Rawlinson, Managing Director of DAZN Bet Canada, discusses why Ontario served as its gateway into North America, how it plans to differentiate itself in Canada’s competitive market, and why it believes a “second-screen” betting experience will define its strategy for the foreseeable future.
What made Ontario the right entry point for DAZN Bet’s expansion into North America, and why was now the right time to enter the market?
Ontario was the right entry point because it combines a mature regulatory framework with a market that already understands and trusts the DAZN brand. After establishing a strong foundation across Europe, Canada was the natural next step.
With experienced local leadership now in place, we’re positioned to grow responsibly and at scale. Ontario gives us both a meaningful market and a strategic base for our long‑term goals across Canada.
Ontario has one of the most competitive regulated iGaming markets in the world. How does DAZN Bet plan to differentiate itself from established sportsbook brands?
DAZN Bet enters Ontario with something most new operators lack: an established sports brand with real global awareness, credibility, and trust. Our goal isn’t to replicate the same experience with a different logo but to combine DAZN’s deep understanding of sports fans with a localized, high‑quality betting experience.
While sports is central to our identity, Ontario is a casino‑led market, so building a strong casino proposition and creating a natural pathway between sports and casino will be essential. Over time, users will also see distinctive co‑branded casino content developed specifically for DAZN Bet.
DAZN has experimented with watch-and-bet experiences in other markets. How do you see the relationship between sports streaming and betting evolving in Canada?
DAZN’s sports presence gives DAZN Bet an authentic connection to fans, but our approach to integration in Canada is intentionally measured. There are currently no plans for customers to place bets directly within the DAZN streaming platform.
Our immediate focus is delivering a strong second‑screen experience, where fans can watch on DAZN and engage with DAZN Bet separately. Any deeper integration will be guided by broadcasting rights, regulatory requirements, customer consent, and the clear separation between the streaming and betting businesses.
Sportsbooks are increasingly competing on media, content, and engagement rather than just odds and promotions. How do you see the relationship between sports media and betting evolving, and where does DAZN Bet fit within that shift?
Fans want more than competitive odds. They crave relevant content, fast withdrawals, personalization, product quality, and trusted brands. DAZN Bet is well positioned because sports content and sports audiences are already core to DAZN’s broader business. Our advantage isn’t just access to media inventory; rather, it’s a deeper understanding of how fans engage with sports.
In Canada, customer acquisition will be phased and disciplined as we ensure our product meets the high expectations of Canadian players. Retention is the real test, and we’ll use our understanding of sports fans and customer behavior to deliver personalized, responsible experiences that keep customers engaged.”
Alberta’s regulated iGaming market is now live. What opportunities do you see in Alberta, and how will your approach there differ from Ontario, if at all?
DAZN Bet was live from day one in Alberta, which reflects our commitment to the Canadian market. Alberta has an established online gaming audience and a strong and passionate sports culture, making it an attractive opportunity even with several well‑known operators entering simultaneously.
DAZN already has meaningful brand recognition in the province, and while our core proposition remains consistent, we will tailor the product and customer experience specifically for Alberta players. Responsible gambling will remain central to our approach in both provinces.
Looking beyond the initial launch phase, what are DAZN Bet’s broader ambitions for Canada over the next few years, both in terms of product development and market expansion?
Our goal is to establish DAZN Bet as a credible, trusted, and recognizable Canadian betting and entertainment brand. Over time, we want to become a leading operator by combining DAZN’s sports heritage with a competitive sportsbook and casino offering tailored to Canadian players.
Product development will be driven by Canadian customer behavior, local expertise, and regulatory standards. DAZN’s recent CFL agreement underscores the broader organization’s commitment to Canadian sports and long‑term growth in the market.
Ultimately, we’re building a distinctly Canadian experience rather than importing a European operating model.
