The National Football League (NFL) has cancelled its 2026 Supplemental Draft, a decision that effectively blocks former college quarterback Brendan Sorsby from entering the league this summer as he keeps dealing with the consequences of a gambling-related controversy.
Not This Year
According to reports from ESPN, the NFL informed Sorsby and his legal team of the decision in a letter explaining that the league would not conduct a Supplemental Draft this year.
The move leaves the 22-year-old without a direct route into the NFL after he recently sought entry through the rarely used process.
The Supplemental Draft is aimed at college players whose circumstances change after the deadline for the regular NFL Draft, allowing allows eligible athletes to be selected by NFL teams outside the traditional draft cycle, with clubs forfeiting a corresponding pick in the following year’s draft.
However, the event is not held annually and is conducted only when the league determines it is necessary.
Serious Integrity Questions
Sorsby’s case has drawn significant attention following his admission that he placed thousands of sports bets while playing college football at Indiana, Cincinnati and later Texas Tech.
Court filings reportedly included an admission that he wagered on his own team while at Indiana, a violation that led the NCAA to permanently revoke his eligibility.
After initially challenging the NCAA’s decision in court, Sorsby appeared to pivot toward the NFL when legal efforts to continue his college career became increasingly uncertain.
In its letter, the NFL said the circumstances surrounding Sorsby’s application raised serious integrity concerns. League officials also noted that no other player had applied for the Supplemental Draft before the filing deadline, making his petition the sole request under consideration.
The NFL further argued that Sorsby’s submission did not properly address the way he would comply with league integrity policies moving forward or prove accountability for the conduct that led to the NCAA sanctions.
Sorsby’s attorneys have hinted that they plan to appeal the decision through the NFL Players Association.
For the time being, the quarterback’s future is still uncertain, with the NFL suggesting that he could pursue entry through the 2027 NFL Draft, and other reports pointing to the Canadian Football League as a possible alternative.
However, with the CFL season already underway and no team currently holding his negotiation rights, that option appears challenging in the short term.
