Former EPT Main Event Champion Andreas Hoivold Dies at 53

Andreas Hoivold

PokerNews has learned that Norwegian Poker Association Hall of Famer, Andreas Hoivold, has died at the age of 53.

Hoivold was born in Sunderland, United Kingdom, in October 1972, but lived most of his life in Kristiansand, Norway. The proud Norwegian became a professional poker player in 2006, and became a familiar face across Europe and in the United States.

In 2007, Hoivold triumphed in the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Dortmund Main Event, earning €672,000. That prize remained Hoivold’s biggest score throughout his career.

Hoivold’s friendly personality and demeanor at the tables made him the perfect fit for televised poker events. He regularly featured in the televised Poker Million and Late Night Poker in the mid-to-late 2000s. In 2006, Hoivold finished third in the Poker Million V for $250,000.

The popular pro was a regular at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, where he racked up three dozen cashes in bracelet-awarding events. A sixth-place finish in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout at the 2015 WSOP was the closest Hoivold came to becoming a WSOP champion.

The following year, the Norwegian Poker Association inducted Hoivold into its Hall of Fame

Norwegian poker news outlet, Poker.no, published an article in March 2024 after Hoivold became a three-time Norwegian Poker Championship winner. That article mentioned that Hoivold had missed the championships for a couple of years, and that he won the Seniors Event despite requiring a sling on his left arm after an accident on an electric scooter.

The same news outlet revealed that Hoivold had recently ordered a new passport and was making travel plans. Sadly, Hoivold succumbed to organ failure on June 17. He was 53.

PokerNews offers its condolences to Hoivold’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
