bet365 Hit with Hefty Fine in Sweden, Avoids License Revocation

Bet365 has settled a regulatory matter with Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, and will now have to pay SEK 40 million and SEK 4 million for violating customer care and deposit-limit obligations on two gaming entities in the country, Hillside (Sports) ENC and Hillside (Gaming) ENC, respectively.

Bet365’s Casino and Sports Betting Entities Hit with Fines in Sweden

The company supposedly failed to comply with country-mandated licensing rules between January 1, 2019, and April 19, 2022, with the bet365 platform allowing players to opt for no limits when choosing their deposit limits.

Spelinspektionen said that bet365 did not set a technical numerical limit, with the company arguing that there was a “hidden technical limit” of SEK 500 million. Spelinspektionen further determined that the company’s breaches were not isolated events, but systematic and serious enough to possibly mandate a review of the company’s license – including a revocation.

The regulator noted that the entities targeted by enforcement, however, took corrective actions during the audit, and hence the measure was limited to a financial penalty and further guidance on how to implement the correct deposit and customer care rules.

Moving forward, bet365 will comply with a range of prerequisites, including a mandatory review of players who end up losing more than SEK 10,000 monthly, with further measures applied to help protect vulnerable groups and young people aged 18-24.

Bet365’s entities will further pay attention to self-excluded players who have returned to playing and keep closer tabs on these consumers.
